On Saturday, an American college student competing at a NCAA cross-country meet in Georgia died after collapsing midway through the race.
It was later announced by local news that Nefertari Holston, 23, went into cardiac arrest and was immediately transported to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The third-year student-athlete from Dothan, Ala., native was taking part in the Julius Johnson Invitational women’s 5K at Middle Georgia State Invite in Macon, Ga. The area experienced warm temperatures on Saturday morning, reaching 31 C by 8 a.m.
Holston’s sudden death has shocked the Wesleyan College and Macon community. “The entire Wesleyan Community is deeply saddened by the death of one of our students,” Wesleyan College spokesperson Drew Davidson said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends during this difficult time. This student has been a vibrant part of our campus, and this loss will no doubt impact us all.”

“We are providing counselling services to our students, and we encourage anyone to reach out,” he added. “We ask you to respect our students and our community’s privacy as we grieve and come to terms with this loss.”
Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones confirmed that the family had been informed and they are awaiting an autopsy at GBI Crime Lab to be completed on Monday.
