Without a doubt, the Continental GP5000 has long been the best selling road bicycle tyre since it was first launched in 2018. Since then, the range has grown, and Continental now offer a number of different versions of the tyre. We take a look at these options to help you decide which is best for your cycling needs.
GP5000 Clincher
The first to be launched, the GP5000 Folding Clincher tyre was the direct replacement for the older GP4000 tyre. Boasting being 12% better on rolling resistance, and a wopping 20% more puncture protection than it’s predecessor, the GP5000 is the riders choice for those wanting grip and speed. Claimed weight of a 28mm version is 235g for a Black tyre. Specifically to be used with inner tubes there are even in this fitment a number of options of sidewall colour choice.
GP5000 S TR
The Tubeless Ready version of the GP5000, also featuring stronger sidewalls is for those wanting to run without inner tubes. The ‘S’ denotes ‘Sport’ and it features the same Black Chili compound and Vectran Breaker technology for increased puncture protection as its inner tube version. The GP5000 S TR has won key races such as the 2021 Paris Roubaix and World Time Trial Championship showing its impressive versatility. Claimed weight of a 28mm tyre is 305g.
GP5000 AS TR
A welcome addition to the GP5000 family, a tubeless-ready All-Season (AS) model. The best option for maximum protection in all-weather conditions, the GP5000 AS TR perfectly compliments the GP4 Season as a tubeless alternative, and is the best option for winter training rides due to its improved longevity and grip . Claimed weight per tyre is 340g for a 28mm Black version.
GP5000 TT TR
The fastest option in the family, the GP5000 TT TR was designed specifically for the pursuit of speed and has already been proven in both Dan Bigham and Filippo Ganna’s successful World Hour Record attempts. The tyre of choice for Team Ineos in all Time Trials, the reduced weight and race proven quality are for those who want the fastest choice and don’t mind sacrificing some puncture protection in a tubeless offering. Claimed weight per tyre is 240g for a 28mm version.
Hookless Compatible?
There has recently been alot of talk, particularly during the 2024 Spring Classics regarding hookless rims and tyre compatibility. Continental state that all of their Tubeless Ready (TR) versions of the GP5000 can be used with hookless wheels, providing that correct guidance is followed regarding ETRTO specifications of the wheels being used and pressures being used in the tyre.
