How to Make Mummy Dogs

With step by step photos, you’ll learn how to make mummy hot dogs in no time!

Begin by preheating the oven to 375°F, then lining a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a heatproof baking mat.

Next, separate crescent roll dough sheets and lay one sheet flat onto a cutting board. Press sheets together to smooth out perforation seams. Using a pizza cutter, slice sheets into thin strips for the mummy wrap for the hot dogs.

If using cheese, you can now cut each American cheese slice into 4 strips each. Keep in mind, crescent mummy dogs will be a bit messy with cheese.

Holding together a hot dog, a slice of cheese (if using), and the beginning strip of dough in one hand, use the other hand to wrap the dough around the dog. Be sure to leave room for the mummy dog’s eyes! Place onto the prepared baking sheet.

Repeat for all mummy hot dogs. Next, spray hot dog mummies with cooking spray or brush with melted butter for a golden finish.

Bake for about 16 minutes, until dough is golden.

Lastly, make two tiny dots of ketchup or mustard in the open spots on the dogs, then add googly eyes! Enjoy!

Tips for Making Mummy Hot Dogs

  • Use more dough as needed: I found the strips of dough to be a bit short, even with a little stretching. Go ahead and adhere an additional piece of dough to finish wrapping the dog.
  • Mummy Bandages: to make the mummy look more real and cute, once you have the hot dog wrapped in one direction, use additional strips of crescent dough to go in the opposite direction, wrapping ‘til the bottom.
  • Use a pizza cutter: aka a pizza wheel, this kitchen tools makes slicing through the crescent roll dough a breeze.
  • Wet dogs: I found holding the cheese strip and hot dog together while wrapping it a bit slippery and difficult. Feel free to dry the hot dog off before wrapping to make it easier!
  • Skip the cheese if you want the mummy hot dogs to look neat! Otherwise, the cheese will melt and drip over the bandages.

For the Spider Web Dipping Sauce

  • Fill a dipping bowl with ketchup, smoothing into an even layer.
  • Draw concentric circles of mustard over the ketchup.
  • Drag a toothpick from the outermost ring of mustard to the center, creating a webbing. Repeat throughout to create a web!

Spider Web Dipping Sauce

See tips in post for easier, less messy mummy dogs.

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  2. Separate crescent roll dough sheets and lay flat onto a cutting board. As needed, press sheets together to create 4 squares of dough and seal together perforated seams. Using a pizza cutter, slice sheets into thin strips.
  3. If using cheese, slice cheese into 4 strips each. Warning: cheese will likely melt and spread, making the mummies look a bit messy. In my final pics, there is no cheese.
  4. Place a hot dog onto one strip of cheese (if using), then wrap the two together with crescent dough, leaving room for eyes near the top of the dog. You can stretch the dough for thinner mummy bandages, or less for thicker bandages. Set onto the prepared baking sheet and repeat for all hot dogs.
  5. Spray with cooking spray or brush with melted butter.
  6. Bake for 12-20 minutes, or until hot dogs are hot and the dough is golden. Mine took 16 minutes.
  7. Using mustard or ketchup, make two dots on the “face” of the hot dog. Stick googly eyes onto those dots. Enjoy!
