Like most people, we absolutely love Thai food — it’s deliciously sweet and sour, spicy and salty. If we could travel anywhere just to eat food, we’d probably head to Thailand.

Unfortunately, some of our favorite Thai dishes are often high in carbs and sugar including Pad Thai, curry dishes, and many Thai sauces.

Since switching to a low carb diet, we rarely go to Thai restaurants since it can be difficult to order low-carb or sugar-free dishes.

However, it is possible to make yummy low-cab and keto Thai dishes at home! And many of these low-carb Thai dishes are easier to make than you think, especially if you got the right ingredients.

Expert Tips For Making Low Carb Thai Food at Home

When making Thai food at home, there are a number of ingredients and substitutions you can use to keep dishes low in carbs. Tips include:

  • Use a high-quality curry paste: Many green or red curry pastes (for making curry sauces) contain carbs. When purchasing, we recommend buying a high-quality paste like Mae Ploy since you typically use less paste (unlike Thai Kitchen) since it’s more flavorful and spicy. Doing so, reduces the amount of carbs, and you don’t need to supplement it with additional ingredients like ginger or garlic. If you can’t find Mae Ploy, another good brand is Maesri.
  • Use a sugar-free peanut sauce: Be sure to use natural peanut butter with no sugar added when making any type of Thai peanut sauces. We recommend Santa Cruz Organic Light Roasted Creamy Peanut Butter.
  • Be careful with coconut milk: Be careful when buying full-fat coconut milk since some brands include added sugars. Additionally, since full-fat coconut milk does contain some carbs, you may want to go light on it when including in dishes. We recommend using Aroy-D coconut milk since it’s one of the better coconut milks on the market.
  • Use sugar-free alternatives in sauces: Since many Thai dishes and sauces include sugar, be sure to sweeten your dishes with sugar-free substitutes like allulose, erythritol, Monk Fruit or stevia.
  • Replace rice with cauliflower rice: You can replace regular rice with cauliflower rice in any Thai dishes paired with rice. It’s low in carbs and absorbs the flavors of the dish well.
  • Replace noodles with low-carb substitutes: When making Pad Thai or other Thai noodle dishes, you can replace high-carb noodles with a variety of low-carb options including palmini noodles, shirataki noodles, zucchini noodles or spaghetti squash.
