Flight Attendants Swear by This $12 Safety Device

As much as we’d like our vacation accommodations to feel like home, it’s never a good idea to get too comfortable. Considering the fact that airline crew members typically travel alone, flight attendants are often the first ones to preach the  importance  of keeping your guard up at hotels. Many of them even travel with their own personal safety devices, like alarm-sounding doorstops and chain locks, for added security — and this tiny gadget happens to be one of their favorites.

The AceMining Portable Door Lock has almost 15,000 five-star ratings on Amazon, making it one of the retailer’s top-rated safety items for travel. Flight attendants say it’s especially necessary for solo travel, if only for the additional peace of mind. Ringing in at $12 thanks to a limited-time offer,  it’s a fuss-free essential that you’ll be glad you brought on your next hotel or Airbnb stay and vacation rental — hence why it’s at the top of most flight attendant’s packing list.

“I’m a flight attendant and am in hotels four to five nights a week,” one reviewerwrote. “Sometimes the locks just don’t feel sturdy enough. This device gives me an extra layer of security and allows me to sleep at night.”

Besides preventing unwanted intruders, one of the most notable highlights of this portable lock is the easy setup. You don’t need tools to install this temporary lock, and it takes only seconds to attach to your door.

Here’s how it works: The metal plate has two holes, one big and one small, that  grip onto a door’s strike plate. The two large square-shaped holes at the top and bottom of the metal plate are designed to fit around the door’s latch or deadbolt. This plate is attached to a red locking mechanism by a metal chain; this piece slides into either of the two triangular slots on the metal plate after the door is closed. With that red plate now locked in place, the door can’t be opened from the outside.

In their review, one traveler said the AceMining portable door lock is the “best contraption ever”  Lightweight, small, and easy to use, this lock is a great accessory for solo travelers, large groups, and families alike.

According to another flight attendant’s glowing review, the AceMining portable chain lock seems to be “the talk of the airline world.”  Chiming in, a third flight attendant gave it a perfect five-star rating, writing that they’ve had “some weird experiences over the years” and are happy for the extra security this $12 device provides.

The AceMining Portable Door Lock also comes in a two-pack for $21, so you can keep one for yourself and give the second one out to a fellow traveler. In the words of another five-star reviewer, “Every woman should have one,” adding, “The value of knowing I won’t wake up to an intruder standing over me is priceless.”
