The Ingredients

Garlic salt is made with just a few ingredients. I’ve included an extra ingredient that’s entirely optional, but makes the recipe so much more delicious.

  • Salt
  • Garlic powder
  • Dried parsley
  • Onion powder (optional, but the crucial secret ingredient!)

What is Garlic Salt?

Garlic salt is a dry seasoning that’s made with several ingredients, including salt, dried garlic powder, and dried parsley and/or dried onion. Some folks even like to add parmesan, but I avoid it to keep this recipe simpler and shelf-stable.

This seasoning is used to flavor dishes before or after cooking. Garlic salt can be used to add flavor to soups, bread, and more. Or, it can be added to a recipe during cooking so the flavor deepens during the cooking process. I enjoy sprinking some on a batch of air fryer french fries for a little extra zhuzh.

Garlic Powder vs. Garlic Salt

Is garlic salt the same as garlic powder? What is the difference between garlic powder vs. garlic salt? You might’ve wondered one or two of these things on occasion. I’m here with answers!

Is garlic salt the same as garlic powder?

No. Garlic salt is a dry seasoning that’s made with salt, garlic powder, and a number of other ingredients like dried parsley.

Garlic powder is a dry spice that usually consists of just one ingredient: garlic. Fresh garlic is dehydrated then ground in a fine powder. That’s it.

Garlic Powder vs. Garlic Salt

Thus, garlic powder is simple, 1-ingredient dry spice that’s made only with garlic, while garlic salt is a multi-ingredient dry spice that’s made with garlic powder, salt, and more.

How to Make Garlic Salt

I’ll go through the simple steps on how to make garlic salt.

Just keep in mind that exact instructions and measurements are further down this post, in the recipe card. 😉

First, add salt and garlic powder to a small bowl.

Then, add dried parsley and onion powder. Feel free to skip the onion powder.

However, I highly recommend adding this secret ingredient because it adds a delicious, deeper flavor to your garlic salt.

Then, whisk all the ingredients until well mixed. Don’t worry–if these ingredients separate a bit once they’re sitting in your pantry, simply give the jar a shake to mix it thoroughly again.

Pour this mixture into an airtight container. Store in the pantry or in the cupboard until ready to use!

Garlic Salt Substitute

If you don’t have garlic salt on hand, then this recipe will truly come in handy.

Simply follow the instructions to mix together garlic powder, salt, and a few other ingredients to use as a garlic salt substitute. You can easily use this on toast, pasta, and so much more!

If you’d rather use fresh garlic, mix together minced garlic with salt and add it to your dish. Just bear in mind that fresh garlic salt cannot keep for as long as when it’s made with garlic powder.

Storing Instructions

How long can I keep this in my pantry?

You can keep this homemade spice for up to 6 months, if stored in an airtight container.

As I have noted on many recipes, the best environment for keeping your goodies fresh is cool, dark, and away from direct sunlight. This note includes homemade spices!
