Chuck Peña PEZ sez: PEZ previously featured Tifosi’s Crit Fototec Readers last October. The Rivet is similar, i.e., more of a mid-size design (each lens is 42.1 mm tall x 71.5 mm wide and total frame width is 137 mm). Both are Fototec so the lenses adjust to light. What’s different is the Rivet Readers (available with +1.5, +2.0, and +2.5 magnification) have Clarion Red Fototec lenses. So when exposed to sunlight and the lens tint darkens, the outer surface of the lens also changes to a red mirrored finish. Cool. 😎

Like the Crit, the Rivet is a style that’s well suited for riding (but could also be used for other sports). The Fototec allows 76% light transmission low light and darkens to 27% light transmission in full sun. I have several different pairs of Tifosi sunglases with Fototec lenses and am a fan of a single “do it all” lens rather than having to swap lenses in and out for different conditions. Where they excel is on days when the sun is in and out of the clouds. The darkest lens tint is dark enough for bright sunlight. But the lens lightens up when it gets cloudy or riding in the shade — important to be able to spot road imperfections. And I can ride at night in an urban environment where there’s street lighting and other ambient light (along with my 1000 lumens headlight). But I would want a clear lens for riding at night in an “open spaces” environment without street/ambient lighting.

I actually don’t need the reader magnification to be able to see the displays on my bike computers (Hammerhead Karoo and Wahoo ROAM), but it’s nice not needing a separate pair of reading glasses to read messages on my phone (or the receipt at a coffee stop). If you’re someone who has to squint a lot looking at your bike computer, the Tifosi Rivet Readers could be the ‘droids you’re looking for.
For me, the Rivet Readers are perfect when I go out on walks (I’m building back up after my catheter ablation for AFib to four miles 4 or 5 times a week). They allow me to easily read the Strava app screen on my Apple Watch that shows elapsed time, speed, distance, and heart rate.
