Learn how to make Homemade Garlic Powder in your kitchen with our super easy recipe. Using a dehydrator, transform fresh garlic cloves into a flavorful, aromatic powder that adds a delicious touch to your favorite dishes. No more store-bought alternatives; make garlic powder and enjoy it all year.
Another great addition to my pantry. I make this spice every year when fresh garlic is available in vegetable markets.
Sprinkle on top of your favorite pasta, whether it is a classic marinara pasta or a savory fettuccine alfredo. Add a pinch to your dips and sauces, like a simple guacamole or cheese dip, to transform their whole flavor profile.
Why You Will Love This Recipe
- Strong Flavor – Commercial garlic powder cannot compete with a homemade punch. The flavor is more intense, aromatic, and downright irresistible.
- No Additives – When you DIY, you control what goes into your garlic powder. There are no preservatives or additives, just pure, natural garlic goodness.
- Cost-Effective – Forget about buying those tiny jars at the store. Making your garlic powder is not only tastier but also budget-friendly.
- Versatile – Sprinkle it on anything. This homemade gem complements various recipes, from roasted vegetables to pasta dishes.
Make Your Own Garlic Powder Using Dried Garlic Slices
In all the years I have been making my own homemade recipes, I have proved that it is better to fill your pantry staples using organic ingredients in a natural way.
This recipe uses garlic and drying it to make a fine, smooth powder. It is also a way to preserve garlic for much longer. Making garlic powder at home is almost as easy as buying store-bought ones, so I suggest you make this from now on.
How To Perfectly Grind Granulated Garlic?
There are many gadgets you can use to grind your garlic, whether you like it granulated or powdered. My favorite is the Magic Bullet, but a simple coffee grainer or small blender will also work.
I have made a recipe for how to make granulated garlic, and I also used a magic bullet blender to control the process so the garlic would not turn into powder.
If you plan to do this recipe using a magic bullet blender, you can pulse instead of pressing to get perfect garlic granules.
Hacks For Peeling The Garlic
- Crushing with a Knife – Place a garlic clove under the flat side of a wide knife and press it quickly with your palm. The skin will loosen, making it easier to peel.
- Shake in a Jar – Place garlic pieces in a closed jar and shake vigorously. The friction helps to loosen the skins, and you can easily pick out the peeled ones.
- Roll it Out – Gently roll a garlic bulb under your hand’s palm. This helps separate the cloves and loosens the skins.
- Freeze and Squeeze – Freeze cloves for about 15 minutes, then squeeze them with your fingers. The skins will break, and you can easily remove them.
How To Make Garlic Powder In A Food Dehydrator
I will show you how to make this easy recipe at home using only a few ingredients. Follow the steps and the whole guide to achieve the perfect garlic powder.Â
This garlic powder recipe is one of the simplest I have ever tried, and it has made a huge impact on my kitchen and cooking, so let’s get started.
Kitchen Gadgets Needed:
- Dehydrator: It is the best gadget for drying garlic if you cannot sun-dry it. It removes moisture from any vegetables and fruits without removing their natural flavor.
- Magic Bullet: It is essential to grind the dried garlic as quickly. It’s a handy and compact gadget that you can use for any recipe, especially making homemade powdered pantry staples.
- Spoon:Â Transfer the garlic powder into a small container after grinding and make sure it is perfectly ground and powdered.
- Glass Container: Needed to store your homemade pantry staples.
Ingredients Needed:
- Fresh Garlic Bulbs:Â Look for perfectly round bulbs with crispy outer skin. That is how you know the garlic is freshly harvested and new.
- Olive Oil:Â Use the slices to prevent them from sticking on the trays during the whole process.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS TO HOMEMADE GARLIC POWDER RECIPE
First Step: Prepare Your Garlic
Pick your garlic. You can use purple garlic as it is the juiciest and mild-flavored garlic, but all types are okay as they produce the same flavor.
Fully clean all the garlic pieces that you are using for this recipe. Peel each garlic clove and cut the base part at the bottom of the cloves, then prepare your dehydrator.
Second Step: Dehydrate The Garlic
Slice the peeled garlic cloves into thin slices and set aside.
Attach a plastic silicone insert to the single-layer trays to hold the small slices while drying. Spray a small amount of olive oil and spread it around the tray.
Place the garlic slices onto your dehydrator trays in a single layer and dehydrate for about 6 hours until garlic is dry fully.
You will know the sliced garlic flakes are dry once they turn crispy without moisture from the slices.
Third Step: Grind
Once the garlic is completely dry, place it in your magic bullet or any of your chosen gadgets for grinding.
Use a food processor or coffee grinder to make a fine powder. Mortar and pestle are also good options as they are used manually to grind food.
Fourth Step: Check For Fineness And Enjoy
We want our garlic powder to be smooth and fine, so ensure no coarse bits are left from the dehydrated garlic.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- Grinding – use a coffee grinder, food processor, mortar, and pestle to make fine powder if a magic bullet blender is unavailable.
- Choosing garlic – opt for fresh garlic from the market. You can use purple garlic or porcelain garlic like I did.
- Avoid moisture – make sure the garlic and equipment are bone dry. Even a hint of moisture can lead to clumping and spoil the batch.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Substitute For Garlic Powder
If garlic powder is unavailable and you do not have time to make a homemade one, you can always substitute it for onion powder or make garlic salt.
Can I Dry Garlic In The Oven?
Sure, drying garlic in the oven is simple. It is like drying garlic in the dehydrator. Just make sure your oven is set to the lowest temperature to avoid burning it. Pop slices in the oven and bake until the garlic turns dry and brittle.
What To Use Garlic Powder For?
Use garlic powder to flavor your green salad and make your stir-fry chicken recipe more spicy. Garlic powder is also perfect for marinating meats for grilling, baking, or pan-searing.Â
Add it to your grilled shrimp skewers and your grilled vegetables, like Brussels sprouts skewers, to make a perfect snack with the right savory flavor. No one gives such a rich flavor as garlic. Just a teaspoon of garlic powder can change the taste of any dish.
How Do I Store Powdered Garlic Cloves?
To preserve powdered garlic, store it in an airtight container, away from heat and sunlight. Choose a cool, dark place like a pantry. Make sure the container is tightly sealed to maintain freshness and prevent moisture. This helps preserve the flavor and potency of your homemade powdered garlic for an extended period.
Freezing powdered garlic seasoning is not recommended, as moisture can affect its texture and flavor. It’s best to store it in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.Â
