How to run your first FKT

The thrill of chasing a Fastest Known Time (FKT) is captivating a growing number of trail runners and thru-hikers. If you’re eager to embark on your own FKT adventure, you’re in the right place—we’ll guide you through everything you need to know. Unlike traditional races, FKTs are more personal and self-driven, often set on lesser-known trails. This makes them an exciting challenge for those looking to push their limits. Here’s how to prepare for your first FKT, from grasping the fundamentals to mapping out your route.

What is an FKT?

Simply put, an FKT is the fastest recorded time someone has completed a specific route—often on breathtaking trails, long-distance paths or iconic traverses. The beauty of FKTs lies in their accessibility; anyone can dream up a path and follow the established guidelines or challenge an existing speed record.

Last week, American ultrarunner Tara Dower shattered the supported speed record on the Appalachian Trail, speeding past the previous FKT champion, Belgian ultrarunner Karel Sabbe by more than 13 hours. Cornwall, Ont.’s Cody Taylor recently set a new FKT on Ontario’s 900K Bruce Trail. Over the past decade, the concept of FKTs has exploded in popularity, with adventurers like Dower, France’s Claire Bannwarth and Spain’s Kilian Jornet making headlines with their remarkable records on known routes like the Colorado Trail,  and lesser-known traverses like Jornet’s Alpine Challenge—FKTs can be multisport, and Jornet’s efforts often include a combo of running, biking and mountaineering.

FKTs can be broken down into three types of attempts. A supported FKT means you can accept any kind of aid at any time from crew or pacers so long as you are moving with your own effort. A self-supported FKT means that you carry what you need and access resources that are equally available to anybody else; you can ask for help from strangers or resupply at stores. An unsupported FKT has you packing all your own stuff and carrying it with you throughout your effort. You are not allowed to accept help from crew, pacers or external resources. The FKT website is a great source of knowledge on the rules and routes you can choose from.

Choosing your route

Choosing the right route is essential for successfully tackling your first FKT. You have the option to select a popular, well-traveled path or venture off the beaten track with a less-explored route. The FKT website features a comprehensive database of existing records, showcasing numerous options across various regions. However, don’t feel limited to these established trails—you can also craft your own FKT as long as you adhere to the official guidelines. This flexibility allows you to customize your adventure and make it uniquely yours.

When choosing your route, look for trails that match your skill level and appear manageable. Consider distance, elevation gain and logistics—how much gear will you need to pack, are you prepared in case of an emergency and where can you access your crew or supplies if you have opted for a self-supported or supported FKT.

Training and preparation

Training for an FKT involves more than just long runs. You need to tailor your plan to the specific demands of your chosen trail. If your route includes steep climbs or uneven terrain, be sure to incorporate hill work, technical trail running and strength exercises into your regimen. Practising eating on the go, as well as carrying the appropriate amount of water, is essential. Many athletes recommend testing your fuel and gear during training to ensure you’re comfortable on the actual attempt.

Running an FKT is a test of endurance, preparation and mental strength. With careful planning, training and determination, your first attempt can be a success, regardless of whether you capture that new record. If you fall short, simply consider it a fantastic, fun, training effort and keep coming back for more.
