Insider Tips & Your Access To Hyatt Prive Benefits

Nestled in the heart of Chinatown NYC, Hotel 50 Bowery is a vibrant JdV by Hyatt boutique hotel that seamlessly blends modern luxury with the neighborhood’s rich cultural heritage.

The price point for a New York City hotel is incredible, especially when you book using our Hyatt Prive benefits that will wrap breakfast and some other perks into your stay at no extra cost.

While it doesn’t have a lot of amenities that I seek out at other hotels, it exceeded my expectations, and I will stay there again. Let me tell you more in my review below.

50 Bowery New York, New York, 10013

What I love

  • Reasonable pricing in Manhattan, especially for what you get.
  • I’ve seen it as low as $160/night (I KNOW – for NYC, this is a steal), but it’s usually $200s.
  • The insane location, steps from the best of Chinatown
  • And you can easily walk to SoHo, Little Italy, NoHo and more
  • The Chinese decor and amenities throughout
  • Friendly and helpful staff
  • Hyatt Prive benefits through me

Good to Know

  • Like many city hotels, street noise is a concern for light sleepers
  • Noise from nearby nightlife could also be a concern
  • We slept well but it wasn’t the most comfortable bed
  • Not a lot of dining in the hotel but it doesn’t matter
  • The king rooms sleep two people, two double beds and suites sleep up to four people

The Chinatown Location Is Everything

People walk along Bayard Street in Chinatown NYC.
Bayard Street in Chinatown, like a two-minute walk from the hotel.
  • Chinatown: Explore the bustling streets of Chinatown with its numerous shops, markets, restaurants, and cultural sites literally steps from the hotel.
  • Little Italy: A short 5-minute walk (approximately 0.2 miles) lands you in Little Italy, known for its historic charm and delicious Italian eateries. We also enjoy the restaurants in Nolita.
  • SoHo: About a 10-minute walk (approximately 0.5 miles) from the hotel, SoHo offers trendy boutiques, art galleries, and cafes.
  • Brooklyn Bridge: A 15-minute walk (approximately 0.7 miles) takes you to the iconic Brooklyn Bridge.
  • New York University: It takes 22 minutes (approximately 1 mile) to reach the John A Paulson Center, home to many athletic events, and it’s a bit further to Washington Square. It’s a lovely walk, we’ve done it many times.

If You’re a Hyatt Globalist…

We received two metal water bottles that could be refilled at stations on even floors. We also received $25 per person or $50 total per day to use on breakfast. Details on how breakfast worked are below.

Our room was also upgraded from a basic King to a City View King that was in a prime corner location. The standard 4 p.m. check-out applies if you need it.

Felt like a Hong Kong hotel in places, and I know those well.

Rooms

The rooms are typical big city size at 260 square feet for the kings, but it was fine. We had enough space to set up a couple of luggage racks. It has an empty mini fridge but no in-room coffee. There was lots of natural light.

You’ll want to bring your own refillable water bottle. We had a refill station on our floor. There were also plenty of plugs for devices.

Our 1 King Bed with City View Room
  • 1 King Room: 260 sq.ft., with one king bed. Lower East Side city views, accommodating up to two adults.
  • 2 Double Beds Room: 260 sq.ft., with two double beds. City views, suitable for up to four adults.
  • Manhattan Bridge King Room: 260 sq.ft., with one king bed. Stunning views of the Manhattan Bridge and is on the higher floors, accommodating up to two adults.
  • 1 King Bed with City View Room: 260 sq.ft., with one king bed. Views of the Midtown Manhattan or Manhattan Bridge, suitable for two adults.
  • 2 Double Beds with City View: 295 square feet, with two double beds. Views of Midtown or Manhattan Bridge from the 9th floor up.
  • 1 King Bed Studio: 340 square feet, with one king bed and a small seating area. It accommodates two guests and has views of the Lower East Side. I might book this next time for a little extra space.

Sure, it’s a further walk from the elevator but I’d request a corner room. We had one, and you get an extra window.

Suites

  • Kindred Suite ADA Tub: 475 sq.ft., with one king bed open to a separate living area. Offers panoramic city views, accommodating up to four adults.
  • Manhattan Suite with Terrace: 515 sq.ft. (plus 150 sq. ft. furnished terrace), with one king bed and a separate living area. Features views of the Manhattan Bridge, accommodating up to four adults.
  • Bowery Suite: 635 sq.ft., with one king bed, a separate living area, and a dining area. Features panoramic city views, accommodating up to four adults.

Rooftop Bar, Restaurant and Breakfast

You’re in Chinatown, which has some of the best food in the country steps from your room, but there are a few options in the hotel.

Breakfast

There isn’t a breakfast restaurant, but you can order room service breakfast. When it’s ready, they’ll call you to pick it up at the front desk, or they can bring it up to you. It comes in disposable containers. The breakfast was pretty good.

Here’s how it worked during my stay for Globalist and Hyatt Prive guests who receive daily breakfast. The overnight manager sent a promo code around 3 a.m. that was different each day. You scan the QR code menu in your room or use the link provided in the manager’s email to order breakfast. We received $50 total ($25 per person per day for up to two people).

We wound up not using the breakfast on one day, so we basically ordered a ton of bottled water, orange juice, and a couple of other nonperishable items to keep in the room’s mini-fridge.

Complimentary Morning Coffee and Tea

Guests can also bring their breakfasts here to eat in the morning. The hotel laid out several newspapers including The New York Times and China Daily. The glass doors in this photo open to an outdoor patio that has some outdoor games on it.

The Crown Rooftop Bar

This is a happening place on the 21st floor where you can sip craft cocktails amid incredible views of the city. Its menu changes, but it’s mostly light bites like pork dumplings, pretzel bites, hummus and crudite/pita type stuff.

We didn’t have a chance to check it out because of all the places to eat near Hotel 50 Bowery, which I’ll mention below.

The front desk also has a selection of grab-and-go drinks.

Amenities at Hotel 50 Bowery

  • Fitness Center: There’s a small yet equipped fitness center, open 24/7.
  • Art Throughout the Hotel: There’s a permanent art collection in the hotel worth taking note of that showcases the neighborhood’s history and heritage through photographs and prints. It adds a nice pop to the concrete and dark woods common in Asian decor. There is other modern art there, too, like prints by designer Cynthia Rowley.
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi: It works pretty well.
  • Pet-Friendly Accommodations: Yes, you can bring your pets with no fee required, and I saw plenty of them throughout my stay.
  • Concierge Services: It seemed like the front desk doubled as the concierge desk, but everyone knew the area extremely well. Team members also speak Cantonese and Mandarin.

Notable Nearby Dining

Remember what I said about the concierges? This is their list of dining recommendations. You’re welcome.

Spot on recommendations but I have a few others.
  • Joe’s Shanghai: Famous for its soup dumplings, Joe’s Shanghai is literally right below the hotel. It. nearly always has a line. So you should order for pick-up and eat it in the hotel. That’s what we did, and I highly recommend it.
  • Nom Wah Tea Parlor: This historic dim sum parlor is about a 7-minute walk (approximately 0.3 miles) away. The front desk staff member who checked us in recommended it as soon as it came up that my daughter was born in Hong Kong. It didn’t disappoint.
  • Deluxe Green Bo: Authentic Shanghai dishes, including xiao long bao. (approximately 0.2 miles) from the hotel.
  • Peking Duck House: A renowned spot for Peking duck, it is a 6-minute walk (approximately 0.3 miles) away.
  • Chinatown Ice Cream Factory: It’s touristy but family-owned the ube ice cream is delicious. Or lychee. Or green tea.
  • Xian Famous Foods: Spicy lamb noodles. We first saw this place on TV (approximately .3 miles).

I literally could go on and on about all the places within a 2-7 minute walk.

Entrance to Hotel 50 Bowery.
Unassuming entrance – you could easily drive by it.

The Bottom Line

Night view of Midtown from our City View room.
Concrete jungle where dreams are made of — the view from our room.

We’ve spent a good amount of time in New York City, and I find that when I stay in one area, I tend to explore it. I wanted to stay in Chinatown. I knew we would walk to SoHo, Nolita, and NYU. It was super easy and safe to just walk everywhere and I enjoyed eating like all the dumplings.

Plus, there’s the price. I get tired of spending $1200/night sometimes or whatever it is at the other luxury hotels I like in NYC. It’s refreshing to pay less than a nice hotel would run in San Diego, and I really appreciate the value.

Is it for everyone? No. You need to be on a trip where you don’t need a bunch of in-house restaurants or high-touch service and are okay walking outside for food.
