Have you ever tried Irish Sea Moss? Sea moss gel or sea moss powder? I tried it for the first time last year, and I want to share what I’ve learned and introduce this highly nutritive food to you.
I discovered Survival Moss last summer. I talk about it in this video. See, one of my fascia flo members sang the virtues of sea moss gel after one of our live classes. She mentioned she was even using it in oil-free recipes!
Barbara sparked my interest and I was delighted to find a sea moss company at our local farmers’ market that summer. I owe my newfound love of sea moss to this dear woman, Barbara. ❤️ She passed away last winter and I will always be grateful for her introducing me to the wonders of sea moss. Rest in peace, Barbara. 🙏
Sea Moss: What is it?
Sea moss (aka Irish Sea Moss) is a marine vegetable, similar to seaweed and sea algae. As a nutrient-rich food, sea moss is especially beneficial for immunity, thyroid health, gut health, and joint health.
As a sea vegetable, I consider sea moss a food rather than a supplement – because it comes straight from a whole food and isn’t extracted or modified. And I’m not dismissing supplements. We have used this one for years, and rotate through other supplements at times throughout the year, as we need.
Now, sea moss is a food that contains 92 minerals & nutrients of the 102 our bodies need, in a bio-available form that your body recognizes. Pretty impressive.
Moreover, my fascia flo friends, sea moss also supports the health of our connective tissue. 👏
Sea Moss: Health Benefits
Sea moss supplies calcium, magnesium, zinc, and vitamins A, E, and C, and also iodine. Iodine is important for thyroid health and metabolism. Here are some of the reported benefits:
⭐️ digestive health
⭐️ improves skin conditions including acne, rashes, psoriasis, dermatitis, and eczema
⭐️ helps to balance hormones
⭐️ builds blood
⭐️ promotes healthy digestion
⭐️ can promote mental and emotional wellbeing
⭐️ helps improves circulation
⭐️ enhances libido
⭐️ supports healthy gums
⭐️ effective at reducing dandruff
⭐️ helps to expel mucus
⭐️ valuable source of taurine, known to support a healthy metabolism
⭐️ rich in polysaccharides (found to strengthen the immune system)
⭐️ helps to Strengthen Connective Tissue
Wait.
Maybe you’re someone that really dislikes seaweed. (I’m with you.) Perhaps you hate anything with a seaweed flavor – no sushi, no nori, nothing with a fish-y tastea. (Again, with you.) You’ll be very happy to know that sea moss gel can have no seaweed-like flavor. I say “can” because it depends on the brand.
Which is where Survival Moss comes in.
Sea Moss: Why Choose Survival Moss?
First, you can source dried sea moss and make your own gel at home. During the winter, after our farmers’ market had closed for the season and I was longing for my sea moss gel, I decided to try my hand at it.
It was … okay. It certainly didn’t have the very clean flavor and smooth texture that Survival Moss has crafted. Plus, while not difficult to make, it does take a little time and care.
Next, I decided to try a few other brands of sea moss gel that I could source on amazon.
That… was a disaster. They tasted horrible. Not just “fish-y” but fausty; musty.
It’s very important to find a reputable brand of sea moss gel; a brand with integrity.
Here’s the tricky bit: sea moss gel needs to be kept refrigerated. For sea moss to be bio-available, it must be consumed as a gel, and the shelf life of sea moss gel is only 3-4 weeks and requires refrigeration.
Thankfully, Survival Moss has found a way for everyone to consume and benefit from Irish Sea Moss – without the trouble of shipping a refrigerated gel product.
Survival Moss pioneered the concept of using an advanced preservation technique to create a superior product: Instant Sea Moss Powder. Their process utilizes extremely cold temperatures and a deep vacuum to remove 99.9% of the water – thus preserving the gel without any additives. All this, while maintaining 97% of the original nutritional value
This freeze-drying method brings you a sea moss product that is:
(1) lightweight
(2) shelf-stable and
(3) retains nutrients
Even better, their freeze-dried Irish sea moss is basically tasteless and odorless… it doesn’t smell or taste ‘fishy’. If it did, I wouldn’t consume it. And I do. I sometimes stir it in a little tea and take it.
Bonus: because Survival Moss freeze-dried sea moss has such a neutral flavour, I’ve been using it in new recipes, including chocolate pudding, rice pudding, and salad dressings. It works brilliantly to thicken sauces and puddings, and you wouldn’t know the base includes health-promoting sea moss. Recipes are soon to come!
For now, I want you to experience sea moss in your life. If you are local, please visit the White Rock Farmers’ Market and pick up some of their gel. The sweet cinnamon flavor is so tasty it will surprise you!
Or, order online. If you do, use code DREENA for 10% off. I am honored to affiliate with this company, and grateful they are offering you a discount.
Survival Moss: Chaga + Lion’s Mane
When you link over to Survival Moss, you’ll also find chaga and lion’s mane.
Chaga and lion’s mane are adaptogenic mushrooms. Adaptogenic mushrooms can help reduce the effects of stress on your body. They are not hallucinogenic or “magic” mushrooms. Rather, adaptogenic mushrooms reduce the negative impacts of physical, biological, and chemical stressors on the body – so important for the demands of our modern world. Adaptogens help the body regulate in many ways, including improving mood, balancing hormones, fighting fatigue and boosting the immune system.
Their chaga is in “rock” form, I call them nuggets and they are used to make chaga tea (see this video).
The lion’s mane product is also freeze-dried, making it exceptionally easy to take (and even mix with the sea moss powder).
As an adaptogen, Chaga is said to be beneficial for lowering cholesterol levels, slowing cancer growth, supporting immune function, and reducing blood pressure. It is abundant in antioxidants, with an ORAC value 50% higher than goji berries!
You can read more about sea moss, chaga, and lion’s mane on the Survival Moss site and blog. For instance, read how sea moss can benefit your hair, skin, and nails.
Or read about the Survival Moss story: this company was a journey through Amanie’s diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis.
I hope you found this post informative, and enjoy incorporating these nutritious foods into your diet. Of course, I will be making it even easier very soon with recipes for puddings, dressings, snack bars, and more.
Stay tuned. x Dreena
