Motorhome Window Lock Security- the problem

Unless you’re completely new to motorhomes and campervans (if you are, here are some tips for new motorhome owners!), you’ll probably know that one of the weakest and most vulnerable places on a van are the windows.

Sure, some campervans have sliding windows, which are generally more secure in most situations, but the majority of vans and caravans have large plastic windows, secured by plastic catches.

The problem is that these are fairly easy for thieves to breach, often by pulling back the window very slightly (which is terrifyingly easy to do), then inserting a thin wire or even screwdriver and using that to push up your window levers and unlock the window. An experienced thief can get inside in just a few seconds!

Types of motorhome and campervan window lock

There are many different types of window for campervans, motorhomes and caravans. One of the biggest differences (apart from the physical size), is the way the window is locked.

The plastic lever and tab has physically different ‘arm’ lengths, but one important thing to look for if you are buying a motorhome or camper is whether the windows have a lever with a ‘button’, which helps it click and lock shut.

It’s important to realise that even the same brand can use different window locks, so some models could have the more secure version while others don’t.

So, what do you do if you want to buy your PERFECT motorhome, but the window locks are insecure?

Well, it’s been difficult. There haven’t been a lot of options to improve your motorhome window security. However, there is an option on the market which might be able to help.

Lock M Out- improving motorhome window locks

Lock M Out are a UK company who have created a device designed to help improve your motorhome window locks and the security of your camper.

The device literally slides over your window catch (see video below for demonstration), and then it stops the lever being turned- meaning no-one is able to move it from the outside. In fact, you can’t even remove it from the inside without taking the device off.

It’s so simple, it seems too good to be true, but this is one of those times where simple works best. In fact, to use their slogan, they’ve created a ‘simple solution to a serious problem.’

The device can fit windows in motorhome, campervans, caravans, RVs and even boats- and if they don’t have one which fits they might be able to help you create one.

Lock M Out Review

I were lucky enough to work with Lock M Out to help them create a device to fit my motorhome windows (I currently have a Swift 685 Escape motorhome).

Here’s a review of Lock M Out and the improvements to my motorhome window security by strengthening the locks.

We hope you found the video useful. If you did, we’d love it if you followed us on Youtube. New videos with tips for motorhoming and campervanning in the UK and Europe are released weekly.

Campervan and Motorhome windows security

As you can see, I was really impressed that such a simple solution existed to help increase your motorhome and campervan security.

Of course, nothing is 100% guaranteed, but anything which makes your vehicle more difficult to breach and which gives a visual deterrent is never going to be a bad thing.

Many thanks to Lock M Out for working with us to create a prototype for my motorhome windows. I received free samples and a few finished devices in exchange for my feedback and help, but my review and opinions are entirely my own.
