What is an Oofda Taco?
Have you ever heard of an Oofda Taco before? If not,it’s pretty much a taco on top of Indian Fried Bread. They sell them a lot at Street Fairs here. These tacos are huge and about the size of your head. After you get done eating them, the only thing you can say is Oofda!
Oofda Tacos are topped with regular seasoned beef and taco toppings such as shredded lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, olives, sour cream, and hot sauce.
If you don’t like seasoned taco ground beef on tacos make some Slow Cooked barboca beef or chipotle chicken. Basically any type of protein that you get at Chipotle would be good on top of Indian Fried Bread.
Ingredients Needed for Oofda Tacos
- 2 cupsall-purpose flour –is a type of wheat flour that is commonly used in cooking and baking. It is versatile and can be used for a variety of recipes, including bread, cakes, cookies, and pastries.
- 1 tablespoon baking powder–is a leavening agent used in many baked goods, such as cakes, muffins, and biscuits. It is made up of a combination of baking soda, cream of tartar, and sometimes cornstarch.
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cupmilk –Dairy does not like me at all so I go for a lactose free milk such as Fairlife. It also has more protein in it. If you aren’t dairy free use 1% or 2%.
- 4 cups oil for frying,or as needed

Heat oil in a large, deep heavy skillet to 365 degrees F (180 degrees C). Oil should be about 1 ½ inches deep. Break off ¾ cup sized pieces of dough, and shape into round discs ¼ inch in thickness, making a thinner depressed area in the center. Fry breads in the hot oil until golden on both sides, turning only once. Drain on paper towels.
Top fry bread with beans, ground beef, lettuce and cheese. Spoon picante sauce over. You can also top with other of your favorite taco toppings, such as onion, sour cream or guacamole.
How do I store leftovers?
Once food has cooled, transfer leftovers into airtight containers. Glass containers are a great choice as they are non-porous and don’t absorb odors or stains. If you prefer plastic, make sure it’s BPA-free and food-grade.
Label the containers with the date to keep track of how long the food has been stored. Most leftovers are best consumed within three to four days.
