Our Favorite Turkey Sandwich – Fit Foodie Finds

We’re big sammie fans over here on Fit Foodie Finds, and this is our go-to favorite turkey sandwich recipe. It’s packed full of veggies, sliced turkey and cheese, and a homemade herby mayo you’ll make again and again.

Calling all sandwich lovers! This recipe is for you. When we make sammies, we don’t skimp on the goods that we pack in-between each slice of bread (might we recommend a local loaf of sourdough!). We’re talking, sliced veggies x 5, sprouts, high-quality deli turkey, our favorite slice havarti, and an amaaaaazing homemade herby mayo. So without further adieu, may be present our go-to most favorite sandwich recipe 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻

Ingredients You Need

  • Sourdough bread: we used bread from a local bakery — highly recommend!
  • Stone ground mustard and homemade herby mayo: this sammie has not one but two condiments — one on each slice of the bread.
  • Turkey: the higher quality the sliced turkey, the better this sammie will taste.
  • Green tomato: a sliced green tomato adds gorgeous green color and great flavor.
  • Red onion: any sliced onion will do if a more mild variety is your jam.
  • Alfalfa sprouts: we’re putting sprouts on every sandwich we possibly can, including this one! 🤣
  • Avocado: sliced avocado is a must on sammies for us! Not only  do they provide great flavor, they pack healthy fats, too.
  • Deli pickles: wouldn’t be a deli-quality sammie without the deli pickles 😋
  • Cucumber: it’s fresh cucumber season here in Minnesota, and you betcha we’re putting some on these sammies.
  • Havarti cheese: sliced havarti works great, but any sliced cheese will do — choose your fave!
  • Romaine lettuce: romaine gives this sandwich great CRUNCH.

Don’t Skip the Homemade Herby Mayo

Every sandwich deserves mayo, but we’re amping things up and making our own homemade herby mayo using:

  • Mayo: some of our favorite brands include, Duke’s, Sir Kensington’s and Primal Kitchen.
  • Fresh herbs: we’re using mint, dill and cilantro — it’s such a great flavor combo.
  • Fresh lemon juice: just a squeeze is all you’ll need.
  • Sea salt: salt your herby mayo to taste!
  • Turkey can be substituted with your favorite deli meat. Ham or salami would be delish!
  • Havarti cheese can be substituted with your favorite sliced deli cheese, such as Swiss, white cheddar or provolone.
  • Green tomato can be swapped with another large slicing tomato.
  • Stone-ground mustard can be swapped with yellow or dijon mustard.

Choosing Sandwich Bread

We highly recommend using freshly baked sourdough bread from your favorite bakery. If that is not an option, use your favorite soft bread with enough body to hold all the sandwich ingredients.

Store all of the ingredients for these sandwiches separately until right before serving them.

What to Serve with This Sammie

We’re big fans of a classic sammie + potato chips combo (try our air fryer sweet tater chips!), but we also ❤️ serving these sandwiches with a side of creamy coleslaw or sweet potato fries.

  • First, prepare the herby mayo. Add the mayonnaise, mint, dill, cilantro, lemon juice, and salt to a small bowl. Mix to combine.

  • Spread the herby mayo on one piece of bread and stone ground mustard on another.

  • Begin by stacking the turkey on top of the mayo, followed by a slice of tomato, red onion, ~¼ cup of sprouts, sliced avocado, pickles, cucumbers, Havarti cheese, and one piece of lettuce. Top with the piece of bread with mustard.

  • Repeat step #3 until all of the sandwiches have been made.

  • We highly recommend using freshly baked sourdough bread from your favorite bakery. If that is not an option, use your favorite soft bread.
  • Turkey can be substituted with your favorite deli meat.
  • Havarti can be substituted with your favorite deli cheese.
