Dutch professional cyclist Mathieu van der Poel is tipped to be one of the athletes to watch this year at the upcoming Paris Olympics. He is known for his abilities in the sport’s road racing, mountain biking, and cyclo-cross disciplines.

Who is Mathieu van der Poel?

Mathieu van der Poel is a 29-year-old men’s professional cyclist who was born in Kapellen, Belgium, in January 1995. He’s also known as The Flying Dutchman or M.V.D.P. and comes from a family of cyclists.

He rides for the U.C.I. World Team Alpecin–Deceuninck, and throughout his career, has achieved so much, winning numerous coveted international titles at both junior and senior levels.

He won the Flandrien of the Cyclo-cross on three separate occasions (2015, 2017, and 2018) and the Koning Winter – Best Cyclo-cross Rider of the Year award on four occasions (2015, 2017, 2018, and 2019).

He has also won the Dutch Mountain Biker of the Year award (2017, 2018, 2019, and 2021) and the Gerrit Schulte Trophy – Dutch Cyclist of the Year in 2019, 2020, and 2023.

In 2019 and 2023, he won the Jaap Eden Award – Dutch Sportsman of the Year in 2019 and 2023. In the same year, 2023, he won the Eddy Merckx Trophy – Best Classics Rider of the Year, the International Flandrien of the Year award, and second place in the Vélo d’Or.
