This peach margarita combines the sweetness of peaches with the tangy bite of lime, creating a refreshing drink that will keep you cool on the hottest days. Whether you’re lounging by the pool or hosting a backyard barbecue, a peach margarita is the perfect addition to your summer drink menu.
You can easily adjust the sweetness to your liking with honey, maple syrup or simple syrup, and you can also add a twist by rimming your glass with lime juice and dipping it in salt, sugar, or even Tajín for a spicy kick.
Making a peach margarita at home is simple and requires just a few basic ingredients. No need for any peach-flavored spirits as you’re using an actual peach to get the peach flavor!
Should you have some Peachtree on hand and no fresh or frozen peaches, this Georgia Peach Cocktail and this Peachtree Cocktail are both excellent choices! The Georgia Peach one is probably my all-time favorite cocktail (along with these Apple Juice Cocktails)!
Ingredients
- Optional for the rim: margarita salt, sugar or Tajín – fun, but not mandatory! They add an extra layer of flavor and texture.
- Fresh or frozen peaches – I talk about some alternatives below.
- Tequila – blanco or silver tequila is most commonly used in margaritas, offering a clean and crisp taste. I wouldn’t recommend reposado, which is aged for a few months to a year in oak barrels, which imparts a subtle complexity and a hint of smokiness.
- Cointreau or triple sec – I write about the differences between the two below. I have and use both and don’t prefer one over another in cocktails. This adds depth and enhances the citrus notes.
- Freshly squeezed lime juice – this offers a tangy counterpoint to the sweetness of the peaches. I beg you to please avoid bottled lime juice, as it lacks the vibrant flavor of freshly-squeezed juice.
- Optional: honey or maple syrup or simple syrup – make sure to use maple syrup or simple syrup if you’re vegan.
- Ice
What is Tajín?
Tajín is a popular Mexican seasoning made from ground dried chili peppers, lime, and salt. It has a tangy, spicy, and slightly salty flavor that makes it versatile for many dishes and snacks.
Tajín is commonly sprinkled on fresh fruit, vegetables, and popcorn, and it’s also used to rim cocktail glasses for an extra burst of flavor. Its unique taste enhances the sweetness of fruits and adds a zesty, spicy twist to drinks like margaritas.
If you’re like me and more into sweet cocktails, then skip this and dip the glass rim in sugar.
Triple sec vs. Cointreau
While both are types of orange liqueur, there are some differences.
Cointreau is a specific type of triple sec. When a recipe calls for Cointreau, it means to use that particular brand.
On the other hand, if a recipe calls for triple sec, you can use Cointreau, but it’s not necessary.
Triple sec is generally much cheaper and of lower quality compared to Cointreau. Cointreau offers a more complex, stronger, and smoother flavor.
Since this peach margarita doesn’t heavily depend on the orange liqueur for its flavor, you can use a less expensive triple sec (just not the absolute cheapest) or Cointreau.
Do I need a blender?
If you don’t have a blender, you can use peach puree. If you can’t find that, then peach juice will do, but your margarita will be less peachy than if you had made it with fresh/frozen peaches or puree.
If using puree or juice, shake all of the ingredients together in a cocktail shaker with ice and enjoy.
How to make a frozen peach margarita
If you want a frozen margarita, use frozen peach slices and blend the margarita with a handful of ice.
The texture is akin to a fruity slushie, making it a peachy and refreshing drink. The frozen style is a great option if you prefer a thick, cold beverage.
Peach varieties
To be honest, I just buy whatever’s on sale. And it works!
But if you’re going peach shopping, here’s a short breakdown of the main types.
- Freestone peaches – these are easy to pit and have a sweet, juicy flesh. Varieties like Elberta or Redhaven are popular choices. Since you only need 1 peach, the easy-to-pit thing doesn’t really matter, but it does when making something like Peach Jam.
- Yellow peaches – known for their classic peach flavor and vibrant color, yellow peaches like O’Henry or Suncrest work well.
- White peaches – these are sweeter and less acidic than yellow peaches, providing a delicate flavor. Varieties such as White Lady or Snow Beauty are excellent.
- Donut peaches – also known as Saturn peaches, these have a unique shape and sweet flavor, making them a fun and tasty addition to margaritas.
How to garnish
For a frosty touch, serve in a chilled glass and garnish with fresh peach slices or lime wedges. The lime wedge provides a citrusy burst that complements the sweetness of the peach schnapps.
My peach wedge below is just going for a quick dip. 😆
Is it gluten-free and vegan?
Yes! All of the ingredients in this margarita are gluten-free.
Pure, distilled tequila that is made with blue agave is considered gluten-free. Even if it’s a mix of agave and other sugar, it’s safe for people with celiac disease.
Triple sec is also typically considered gluten-free. It’s made from distilled alcohol, water, sugar, and orange peels, and the distillation process usually eliminates any gluten proteins.
However, it’s always best to check the specific brand’s labeling or contact the manufacturer to confirm there are no gluten-containing additives or cross-contamination during production.
Both types of alcohol are also vegan and they don’t contain any animal-derived ingredients.
If you but flavored alcohol, then it might contain gluten or non-vegan ingredients, so always check!
And Tajín is both gluten-free and vegan, so if you’re choosing to use that, no need to worry.
I hope you’ll enjoy this peach margarita if you try it out! I’d love to hear your thoughts below. 🙂 Thanks!
