This is a collaborative post.
Redesigning your bedroom is an exciting and rewarding project, but it can also feel overwhelming if you don’t know where to start with all the design styles, colour schemes, furniture options and other whatnots.
There’s plenty to unpack, but you can find some clarity below:
Find your style
Are you drawn to the clean lines and neutral colours of a modern, minimalist space, or do you prefer the cosy, layered look of mid-century modern and Art Deco?
Take an online quiz like the Modsy Style Quiz to find a match or browse interior design websites like House Beautiful to see which styles resonate.
Choose a colour scheme
Some styles lend themselves to colour palettes (think crisp whites and nautical blues for a coastal vibe), while others, like mid-century modern, have colour flexibility, with oranges and lime greens being perfect (to name a few).
Consider a neutral base colour for your walls and larger furniture pieces, and then add pops of colour through accents like pillows, curtains, and artwork.
Create a focal point
Your bed frame is the star of the show, so make it a special one. Winged headboard beds like the Birlea Balmoral (pictured above) provide a stately look for classic interior design styles, while sleigh beds like the Urban Beds Aspire Chesterfield do the same but with a more feminine character.

Simpler bed frames like the wooden Nordic Mill Shake and metal Julian Bowen Soto are top choices for eclectic bedrooms.

Industrial spaces suit metallic bed frames like the Flintshire Axton – a stunning antique brass number – and the Flintshire Cilcain.

Maximise storage
Fantastic options include a bed with built-in drawers or a lift-up ottoman bed to store extra linens and out-of-season clothing out of sight.
Wall-mounted shelves and floating nightstands can also help maximise floor space with bags of style. If you have many smaller items like jewellery or accessories to corral, look for decorative boxes or trays that can double as stylish decor.
The back of your bedroom door is another storage space heaven – add an over-door storage organiser for shoes and other bits and bobs.
Invest in high-quality bedding sets
Sheets should be made from natural, breathable fabrics like 100% cotton. Your duvet should be hypoallergenic with a hollowfibre fill – hollowfibre is eco-friendly and has no allergy concerns, unlike feather and down fills.
A case will cover your pillow, but it should be the correct firmness for your sleep position – firm for side sleeping and medium for back sleeping. Front sleepers can make do with no pillow or a thin, soft one.
Make lighting a feature
You could upgrade your ceiling pendant light to spotlights or a Sputnik chandelier or have everything plastered and get some downlights with colour-changeable LEDs.
You could screw some hooks into your walls and drape fairy lights all over and install sticky LED strips underneath your bed frame.
Our favourite idea is wall lights instead of bedside table lamps to free up precious space for books and charging docks.
Add personal touches
Inject personality into your bedroom redesign with colourful artwork, collectables, heirlooms, and books — something as simple as shelves with colourful book spines can transform your bedroom with character.
You could hang some family photos or buy a few posters from HMV or the like to cover up your bare bedroom walls on the cheap.
Summing up
Redesigning your bedroom from scratch is easier with an empty space, so whip your furniture into another room and clear the walls before giving it a go.
Measure up when replacing furniture and get colour swatches before painting walls to avoid design mistakes.
