With the recent soft opening of a newly built beachfront resort in buzzy Canggu, Regent Hotels & Resort has returned to Bali after a long hiatus. “The first-ever private pools and villas were introduced by Regent in Bali in the early 1990s, and this is now the global standard for luxury resorts,” says Regent Bali Canggu general manager Manish Puri.
Fittingly, Regent’s new Indonesian property is made up of all suites and villas — 150 of them — across 14 acres of tranquil seaside gardens designed by renowned Irish landscaping architect John Pettigrew. Featuring lots of timber and indigenous andesite stone, their low profiles create intimate communal spaces. The sense of place is established immediately. “Guests are greeted by our stunning arrival pavilion, where an intricate paras stone carving that displays a whimsical floral motif within the stone sits,” says Puri. “Hand-chiseled by local artisans over 30 days, this work of art sets the tone for the beauty and attention to details for the resort experiences.”
The resort’s architecture was designed by Wimberly, Allison, Tong, and Goo (WATG) in response to Bali’s extraordinary landscapes and traditional artisan villages. For interiors, Regent looked to Hirsch Bedner Associates to integrate vivid hues, local textiles, and diverse craftsmanship, including batik — an intricate cloth made with wax and dye — and hand-carved teak bathtubs.
The spacious suites start at 818 square feet (for the base room category, called the Studio Suite) and sprawl up to 6,652 square feet for the open-plan Two-Bedroom Penthouse with a private pool, an infinity-edge stunner that seemingly melds into the Indian Ocean and clocks in at 322 square feet. The largest villas come with kitchens or pantries plus access to Regent Club, which offers complimentary Champagne, premium libations, all-day bites, breakfast, and an adults-only infinity pool with ocean-view cabanas. There are exclusive curated encounters available, too.
Everyone, regardless of their room type, gets perks like a pillow menu for customized sleep experiences and a private balcony with lounge seating and a dining table for two. In total, the property has nine swimming pools, and the Regent Kids offering is, in true Bali style, an indoor-outdoor play and creative zone.
There will eventually be five distinctive dining concepts. The first to bow are Taru, which will serve an array of flavorful cuisine reflecting — and sourced from — the Indonesian archipelago, and Beach House, where guests can watch surfers play in the waves while sipping elevated craft cocktails tinged with quintessential Balinese ingredients (think dragon fruit, coconut, and mango) and savoring a seafood-focused menu. A Spanish tapas destination by renowned chef Andrew Walsh is coming soon as a stand-alone venue on nearby Batu Bolong street, while later 2025 will see his Michelin star–awarded Singapore concept Cure morph into a merging of modern European cooking with Asian techniques and Indonesian ingredients.
A partnership with Raison d’Etre Spas has resulted in the world’s very first Regent-branded spa, dubbed Regent Spa & Wellness. The pampering sanctuary, which includes seven treatment rooms, a sauna, and a plunge pool, was devised to celebrate the destination’s culture of massage, yoga, and well-being across experiences that speak to and rejuvenate the mind, body, and spirit. On the menu are many hands-on treatments that leave guests in a heavenly state, as well as customizable Kerstin Florian facials, vibrating crystal energy therapies, and light frequency remedies.
Though Canggu is undoubtedly a lively destination, the resort, according to Puri, hopes “to transport guests to a newfound place of exclusivity, serenity, and intrigue. Our guests can look forward to seeing the spirit of Bali represented throughout the resort, alongside the brand’s thoughtful dedication to creating unforgettable moments.”
