Review: Aloha Gravel Shirt by Cycology

You don’t have to be a gravel rider to appreciate Cycology’s Aloha Gravel Shirt (or any of their other gravel shirts). It’s perfect for casual city riding when you don’t want to get all lycra’ed up, or a social coffee ride that’s more about coffee and friends. And it can do double duty as off-the-bike resort wear.

I spent all my summers as a kid at my grandparents’ house on Oahu (Aiea Heights overlooking Pearl Harbor), my mom grew up on Maui, and I still have a lot of relatives in Hawaii. And all the Hawaiian shirts (sometimes also called aloha shirts) in my closet at our house in the Lowcountry are appropriate resort wear for visiting our favorite bars/restaurants in Bluffton and Hilton Head. So I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to sample Cycology’s different aloha-themed offerings.

You can’t see them, but there are two rear zippered pockets on either side of the back of the shirt

A nice touch is that Cycology’s hang tags are attached via safety pin for easy removal rather than plastic fasteners that have to be cut

Cycology’s gravel shirts (men’s and women’s) are more than just gravel shirts. They’re made for gravel riding but also perfect for casual wear or simply taking it easy.

The Aloha Gravel Shirt looks like a regular shirt with a traditional shirt collar and buttons. But it’s made with a technical fabric that’s lightweight, breathable, and wicks moisture. For on the bike, the fabric has some stretch (but not as much as you would find in a typical road bike jersey). For off the bike, the Aloha Gravel Shirt has a casual relaxed fit for comfort and style. On me (5’8″, 130 pounds, ectomorph), a size small fit comfortably loose without being baggy. And the material is soft against my skin. Ditto for the serge stitched seams.

The only thing keeping the Cycology Aloha Gravel Shirt from being an authentic Hawaiian aloha shirt is the lack of wood buttons (inset)

Of course, what sets Cycology apart from the crowd are their designs that tend towards the wild side. Click on the pic below for a link to a video where Sarina takes you inside her design studio.

This pretty much describe most of my rides

I’ve ridden gravel but don’t consider myself a gravel rider. For me, the Aloha Gravel Shirt is just the ticket for for casual, around town bike rides or a social coffee ride.

What makes the Cycology Aloha Gravel Shirt cycling-ready are two rear zippered pockets, each big enough to hold a smartphone (my daughter’s old iPhone 6S Plus for reference)

The Aloha Gravel Shirt is also perfect for lunch or dinner or just drinks at any of the many outside dining venues we love to visit in Bluffton and Hilton Head.

At the moment, Cycology makes a regular Aloha Women’s Jersey and an Aloha Women’s Reborn Jersey (made with recycled materials) — as well as other women’s Aloha kit — but I’m hoping they’ll offer a men’s Aloha Jersey in the near future. It will be a “must have” for me!

PEZ readers know I’m a big fan of #sockdoping and making a statement with my socks. For me, the Cycology Aloha Cycling Socks are the ‘droids I’m looking for.

As cycling socks go, the Cycology Aloha Cycling Socks are relatively “standard.” That’s not a bad thing. It just means they’re what you would expect, i.e., thin with minimal padding. Soft seams with a more or less “invisible” feel. So definitely comfortable on my feet.

One thing worth noting is that Cycology’s socks don’t have specific venting/aeration sections. Not a deal breaker for me. And I’ve ridden in their socks in 90F heat and humidity without any issues.

Unlike a lot of other cycling socks, Cycology’s socks are “one size fits most.” They don’t specify an exact size range, but they fit my US size 9 feet well. The compression isn’t as tight as some other socks I have, but more than firm enough to keep them in place. Also the cuff is doubled over for added grip to keep them up.

On a final note … These are exactly the kind of socks Ed Hood (ever the traditionalist) and I (ever the rebel) would debate. Tall and wild are definitely not Ed’s style. I miss those exchanges. As many PEZ readers probably know, Ed suffered a serious stroke in February.  We don’t expect Ed will make it back into our bunch, so we’ve started a GoFundMe page to help Ed with his future.  Read the full post here – and please consider donating.
