Shaking things up (WHO AM I)?

What a treat I had yesterday… It felt like I got my own sports camp (yes, I am jealous that Knox is currently getting the best training from amazing coaches for his passion).

Amy and I are training for a 5k next month and want to juggle things up from what we normally do. We are using our friend, who was once the 3000m American Record Holder, to help us. This woman is incredible. I wanted to soak in every word she said. She met us at the track, did the warm-up with us, then called out splits and ran around the track to give us tips/motivation to use as we were doing our reps.

Call me crazy but it was so much fun.

We began with a 2-mile warm-up (much faster and shorter than I normally warm up—which was a shock to my system) and then immediately started dynamic drills.

She told me to do something unthinkable. For our first speed interval, she told me I needed to wear my trainers before my cheater shoes haha. I audibly gasped when she told me this but then surprised myself that I could actually get moving in something without a carbon plate. I get so set in my ways that it was fun to be continually shocked by changing things up…

We then did a 1200m, 1000m, 1000m workout with 3-minute recovery jogs. She helped me to work on leaning forward and pushing off the forefront of my foot because I tend to sit back in my stride, which isn’t going to help me get any faster. With each interval, we went out faster in the first 200m, then got into a pace we could hold, and then finished fast in the last 200m. <–Mimicking a short race like the one we are preparing for.

For the cool-down she gave us a few minutes to recover easier but then wanted us to finish off the mileage for the day (9 miles total) faster than we normally do. This was the most challenging part for me because I usually slow down much more for the cool-down. She is having me drop my weekly mileage to 45 for this 5k (I was doing on average around 60-65), and hopefully, that will help to make those 7:XX paces feel a bit better than they do now;)

She told us to eat something the second we finished the workout and to also get an ice bath for 8-10 minutes.

The snowmelt runoff felt like the perfect place to do this. I do think it hurt worse than the workout though;)

Beretta is much more hardcore than I am in this water. She acts like she is a puppy again when we bring her here:

Not a bad view for an ice bath.

We made it over to a splash pad.

We went and grabbed snow cones with friends in town (and Beck’s shirt is on inside out and backward). Motherhood is your child ordering their own but then insisting on eating your entire thing…

And for just a few more random thoughts today:

*The Venus Flytraps at Trader Joe’s have been a highlight for all of the neighborhood kids. They are so fascinated by them.

*My kids are begging me for a cat. Beretta does not like cats but they are convinced she will fall in love with a cat. Don’t worry, we won’t but we will just go to my cousins to play with theirs:)

*I bought some Clean Simple Eat samples and I’m not going to lie, they are pretty good. I haven’t used protein powder in who knows how long but I mixed it up with some fairlife and ice and it was delicious.

Snow cones or shaved ice? What do you call them?

Do you over take ice baths?

Anything new you have tried with your training recently?

Have a protein powder that you love?
