The much-anticipated Noveblast 5 has arrived–and with some super exciting tweaks. First introduced in 2019, the shoe has become a staple trainer for many Asics wearers (myself included). It’s the perfect easy-day shoe, with a lovely bounce that’ll make your stride feel smooth, even on days when the legs are a bit tired.

Upper
The Novablast’s upper has been tweaked, adding a new fabric to make it feel even more comfortable. I found the upper to be excellent (much like the 4) and also found the shoe to fit true to size, with ample room in the toe box.
The tongue of the Novablast 5 takes a page out of the Superblast’s book. Its similar geometry means the tongue and laces fit snugly and provide a super locked-in feel.
Midsole
The midsole has an exciting new update as well–FF Blast Max has come to the Novablast! The shoe’s midsole is entirely FF Blast Max, and this is currently the only Asics shoe that has this feature.
This new foam has increased the bounce factor by more than eight per cent from the previous model. I really felt this on the run–this shoe does bounce. It put a pep in my step as I went out for my run in the dark (with such little daylight available, I’m sure we all feel like running in the dark is the only option right now).
Beyond the bounce factor, I’ve also found the FF Blast Max to be quite durable. I’ve worn this shoe a lot (over 100 kilometres of running) and I’ve yet to see any signs of wear through the midsole.
Outsole
While the foam is a big part of what makes this shoe so snappy, the outsole also plays a part. The pod-like groove underneath the forefoot helps the foam provide the bounce and energy the Novablast is known for. As usual, the outsole is made of Asics’ AHAR rubber, which is known for its traction and durability.
Final thoughts
Overall I find the tweaks to the Novablast to be welcome additions. I love the FF Blast Max midsole, the trampoline effect of the outsole and the extremely comfortable and well-supported upper. I use this shoe for everything from an easy run to a tempo. If you’re looking for a do-it-all shoe, the Novablast 5 could certainly be that for you, or it could also serve as a trusty trainer, partnered with a slightly lighter workout or racing shoe.
