Students twerk during graduation rites, get lambasted on social media for ‘inappropriateness’

Graduation ceremonies are one of the most important milestones in a student’s life. This achievement opens new doors for opportunities that shape their future. However, with this kind of celebration comes respect and responsibility that students must always consider.

In a viral video circulating on Facebook and TikTok, students are addressing the commencement in an unconventional way that many disapprove of. Some students are blatantly disrespecting the ceremony. In the video, Senior High School students from Kapalong College of Technology are seen coming up on stage to receive their diplomas. However, there is a twist because after receiving their certificates, students then dance on stage, with some performing steps from TikTok while others are twerking on the floor.

Due to this, individuals who have viewed the videos are criticizing the students for their disrespectful behavior and questioning whether the school approves of it.

Although some argue that commencement ceremonies are not always serious, they must still adhere to respect because there are representatives present who are deemed deserving of respect.

In a TikTok video posted, the poster, who is also a licensed professional teacher and a public educator, addressed the issue. According to her, graduation ceremonies are meant to be solemn and respected by both educators, students, parents, and anyone present during the ceremony period.

She emphasized, “While we understand that a graduation ceremony is a significant milestone and once in a lifetime event for our students, it is also important to remember that a solemn event or a solemn ceremony requires and demands respect and decorum.” Additionally, the teacher stated that there is an appropriate place for certain events, and students dancing as a form of celebration is not considered bad or inappropriate, but it’s where the act took place that matters.

The public and educators have also reminded the students regarding DepEd Order No. 25, s. 2017, which states, “Graduation rites shall be held with solemnity and dignity.”
