There’s something special about making a from-scratch seasoning that will sit in a spice jar that you labeled yourself, that will go into a recipe that you make, too! This taco seasoning recipe is the BEST, packed with flavorful and complex spices with a hot kick to bring Taco Night to the championship level.

Made with spices that you probably already have in your pantry, this taco seasoning recipe is so quick to make, with most of the time spent on simply measuring seasonings! You’ll never go back to store-bought, and the loved ones that you cook for (including yourself, m’kay) will be so happy for it.

The ingredients for Taco Seasoning laid out on a table, including chili powder, ground cumin, garlic powder, paprika, salt, onion powder, dried oregano, black pepper, and red chili flakes.

What is in Taco Seasoning?

So, what seasonings and spices are in taco seasoning? Glad you asked. For a homemade spice blend that needs to be packed with flavor, spice, and a smokiness that’s signature to taco night, we’ll be using the following:

  • Chili powder: The star of the show, we’ll be using the largest amount of this spice for, well, spice! The warm heat of chili powder is quintessential for homemade taco seasoning.
  • Ground cumin: Don’t skip this one! Cumin is a must-have ingredient in any taco seasoning recipe because it adds warmth and delicious flavor.
  • Garlic powder + onion powder: I love pairing these two together because of their instant-mouthwatering taste and aroma.
  • Paprika: Use smoked paprika if you can; sweet is ok.
  • Dried oregano: We need just a bit of oregano to get this party started!
  • Salt and pepper: Use freshly ground for both if you can.
  • Red chili flakes: I’m one of those people that thinks nearly everything benefits from a pinch of spice. But come on, taco seasoning?!? Surely it needs this beautiful, bold red spicy addition!
