Slip-On Sneakers We Also Tested

We tested 18 slip-on sneakers, but only 11 impressed us enough to make our final list of recommendations. Although we liked some of these slip-on sneakers’ features, they ultimately didn’t meet our rigorous testing requirements to be selected as top picks.

  • Hoka Hopara 2 Hiking Shoes were comfortable and provided adequate support for casual activities. However, they were tough to slip on and off and didn’t have enough ankle support for activities like hiking.
  • Kuru Flux Sneakers deliver good cushioning and support, making them comfortable for long walks and various terrains. However, we had difficulty slipping into them, and we noticed that their ankle collars rubbed against our skin.
  • Ryka Echo Sky Slip-On Sneakers provide good traction, heel support, and stability but are tight across the top and difficult to slip on. They also weren’t very comfortable for long periods, making them less suitable for extended wear.
  • Kane Revive Recovery Sandals are lightweight and water-resistant, so they’re a good option for the beach or other water-related activities. However, they lacked good arch support and shock absorption, so they’re unsuitable for long walks or all-day wear.

What We’ve Updated

  • Since publishing our initial tested roundup of the best slip-on sneakers, we’ve collected long-term testing insights from our original picks and hands-on tested 7 new slip-on sneakers from top-selling brands. Based on our testing, we’ve evaluated each pair of sneakers for fit, comfort, durability, stability, and value and included these new insights in our article.
  • Based on our testing insights, we’ve reworked some of our superlatives and product picks, including Best Overall, Best Budget, Best for Casual Wear, and more.
  • We’ve consulted an additional expert, a podiatrist, to help us understand what to look for in a high-quality pair of slip-on sneakers and to ensure that all of the information in our roundup is up to date.

What to Look for When Shopping for Slip-On Sneakers

  • Fit and Sizing: Slip-on sneakers should be well-fitting to your foot type since loose-fitting shoes can cause trips and falls, while tight shoes can cause circulation and wound problems, says orthopedic surgeon Christopher Hayes, MD, MS. It’s harder to accomplish that “just-right” fit with slip-on shoes because they often don’t have laces to adjust the fit. However, some models come in narrow or wide widths to help you find a shoe that fits your foot shape and size. Your toes should have room to wiggle, while your heel should feel locked in and secure, not sliding back and forth or up and down.
  • Comfort and Support: Look for slip-on sneakers that prioritize comfort with generous arch support and cushioning. The shoe’s midsole should have plenty of cushioning for shock absorption and to keep your feet comfy and energized throughout the day. Consider insoles that contour to the shape of your arch.
  • Materials: Choosing slip-on sneakers made of high-quality, durable materials, such as rubber for the outsole, will improve your overall comfort and help reduce the risk of injury. If you plan to run or walk in them for long periods, look for shoes made with breathable materials that can help control moisture and odor. Upper materials that are knit, mesh, leather, and wool will feel soft and smooth and help prevent chafing.
  • Intended Purpose: Consider whether you’re planning to wear your slip-on sneakers for walking, running, or more for casual wear. If you’re just wearing them around the house, you won’t need as much cushioning, support, and traction as you would if running in them. Examine the tread or sole of the shoe to ensure it offers enough grip and stability for your activities, says podiatrist Gretchen A. Lawrence, DPM.

How We Tested the Slip-On Sneakers

To find the best slip-on sneakers, we tested 18 options from top, trusted footwear brands in our Lab and at home, wearing them on walks, at the gym, and during our daily routines. When testing slip-on sneakers, we evaluate each pair based on the following key criteria.

  • Fit: First, we try on each pair to assess for any initial discomfort. As we walk and run in each shoe, we pay close attention to its fit, ensuring no rubbing, irritation, or discomfort. We also consider whether the upper is flexible enough for a custom-like fit. We prioritize shoes that have a snug fit and generally run true to size.
  • Comfort: As we continue to wear each shoe, we consider factors such as cushioning, arch support, and overall feel. We pay attention to how comfortable the shoe remains over extended periods of wear, particularly during various activities like walking, running, cross-training, and more.
  • Durability: At the end of the testing period, we inspect the shoes for signs of wear, such as fraying seams, loose stitching, stains, or sole degradation. How does the material of the sneakers, including the upper and outsole, withstand repeated use and exposure to various conditions? We also note whether the shoes have stretched out from repeatedly slipping them on and off.
  • Stability: Stability is crucial for preventing excessive foot movement and maintaining proper alignment during physical activities. We assess the stability of each shoe by examining its construction, midsole support, and outsole traction to determine how well it keeps our feet secure and balanced, especially on uneven terrain or during lateral movements.
  • Value: Once testing is finished, we look at the price of each shoe to determine its value score. Considering all the other key categories we tested, we evaluate whether the shoe justifies its listed price. We prioritize shoes that we believe accurately match their price point and are ones we would confidently recommend to a friend.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are slip-on sneakers good for walking?

Slip-on sneakers can be suitable for walking depending on their design and support features. Look for options with adequate arch support and cushioning to ensure comfort and stability during extended walks, Lawrence says.

Do slip-on shoes have good arch support?

Similar to traditional lace-up sneakers, slip-on shoes offer various arch support options. Some may lack sufficient support, while others feature deep heel cups and robust arch support, Hayes says. If you rely on custom orthotics or inserts for proper arch support, seek slip-on shoes with removable insoles or enough depth to accommodate them.

Can slip-on sneakers provide enough support for running?

If slip-on sneakers are well-constructed with a sturdy sole and snug fit, they could be supportive enough for running. For optimal comfort and injury prevention, stick to slip-on sneakers from brands known for their running shoes, such as New Balance or Adidas.
