The Best Cities for Solo Travellers

If you’re more of a mountaineer, Kathmandu is the destination for you!

Located at the base of Mount Everest, this is the perfect place to bask in the epic beauty of the world’s most renowned mountain. There are several hikes you can take up and around the mountain, or if you’d rather see it from another perspective requiring much less walking, take a morning flight to view the sunrise over the mountain peak.

What makes Kathmandu such a great destination for solo travellers? It’s a city filled with history and culture, from the Buddhist temples and preserved traditional architecture to the markets and restaurants of Durbar Square and the Thamel District. As well as a very kind and hospitable population, the crime rate in Nepal is one of the lowest in Asia and with so many Buddhist sites to visit, as well as opportunities to practice meditation or spend time in nature, Kathmandu is a great spot to refresh during your travels.

There are so many cultural experiences you can partake in, whether alone or as part of a group tour. Take a visit to one of the many temples (Swayambhunath Stupa Temple, Boudhanath & Pashupatinath Temple are the most recommended and tourist-friendly) or experience live music at the local jazz bars in the Thamel District. There are many must-see spots just outside of Kathmandu too, including UNESCO World Heritage site Bhaktapur, an ancient preserved city. With so much to experience in this wonderful city, it should definitely make its way onto your Asia travel itinerary.

Our Nepal group tours all take time to explore Kathmandu – you can see them all here.
