Part of the St. George Marathon crew:
Our friend’s kids sign his shoes… such a good idea.
Our makeshift table for bottles:) Keeping it fancy!
The good: Our last 20 miler, and I was very happy with how my body felt! The workout was 2 x 5 miles at tempo effort… The first set was a hilly loop; the second set was mostly DOWNhill. I felt amazing on the first loop (6:26 average), but the second set hurt pretty badly (6:07 average) because…
The bad: I tried this on my run. It has 94 grams of carbs in one pack, so I thought this would be my golden ticket to getting more in carbs throughout my marathon easily. For the first loop, I had a normal gel and then I started sipping on this (it actually tasted amazing, so I was thrilled). I had about a third of it, and then we started the second tempo, and I was planning on taking in more towards the end of that second tempo. NOPE. Two miles into the 5-mile tempo, I started having intense cramping in my stomach… intense. So, my question is, do I stick to what works (Maurten gels) for me, train my body to do better with this drink mix, or dilute it with more water? I put the whole pack in my handheld bottle. HELP ME. I want this to work because it tasted amazing, but maybe this will be my thing for more long, steady efforts… not tempo pace?
And the ugly (just the blood part): Well, I’m super glad I tried the Alphaflys out. I need to go up a half size because my foot was bleeding by the end of the first tempo loop. If I can grab a pair that is a half size bigger, I will be in heaven because these shoes are unreal. They are SO fun, and I felt like I was flying, especially on flat portions. I am a huge fan of them now, and I’ll save this pair for 5k racing, where my feet will be fine for just 3 miles (they didn’t hurt; they just felt cramped).
Training last week:
Monday: 9 miles w/5 of them aerobic threshold 6:49. 3.5 @ 8:10 in the afternoon.
Tuesday: 8 miles @ 8:21 average
Wednesday: 13 total @ 6:56 average with 9 miles in the middle @ 6:20. Was going to run a double but was too tired after this.
Thursday: Off! My body told me to take it off and so that I did.
Friday: 10 miles @ 8:19 average
Saturday: 20 miles with 2 x 5 mile tempos. 7:19 average pace!
Sunday: Off!
I was supposed to hit 75 but hit 63, but I don’t have any regrets taking extra rest.
Nothing is more stressful than when I have a kid playing goalkeeper. She did great, but my heart rate was maxed the entire time.
Skye lost one of her front teeth!!
We ate at Cafe Rio and Beck is just nailing it with the posing.
Been taking them to Cafe RIo since day one.
I wish we could get 5 Sunday mornings a week.
19 days until the marathon… All of the recovering needs to happen!
