The Spice of Life: Cinnamon


The sweet spicy smell of cinnamon can make us feel warm and cozy from the inside out, but did you also know that cinnamon counteracts congestion, stops diarrhea, relieves muscle spasms, and aids in blood flow?

Cinnamon, Cinnamomum cassia, is an energizing bark which is healing to many, and it has been for thousands of years.This nearly universal medicine was adorned for its properties by the Egyptians dating back to 500 BC, in embalming mixtures. Today, cinnamon can resolve our needs while still living; as a remedy for general vitality. Cinnamomum cassia, a tree native to China is more commonly used as a culinary spice, as it is more flavorful than Cinnamonmum zeylanicum, its Sri Lanka native counterpart.

Part used: Inner bark

Qualities: Heating, drying, sweet, spicy, astringent.

Used to treat: nasuea, vomiting, hypertension, internal bleeding, onset of cold or flu, and diabetes. Generally useful for symptoms of feeling cold, dry and frail.

Cautions: contraindications in large doses for extended periods of time. Like most other things, it does well in moderation. Caution during pregnancy as it is a uterine stimulant.

Cinnamon for circulation:

  • The warming effects of a sweet cup of cinnamon tea or can relax muscles, especially for those experiencing menstrual cramps. By increasing blood flow, including circulation to the uterus, cinnamon sends warming blood that relieves cramps.Use 3-4 days prior to period for those with kapha-vata types.
  • Use cinnamon with turmeric for improving circulatory or cardiac problems.
  • Warm, dry and light qualities push circulation to the joints, thereby clearing out excess metabolic waste, ama. This effect is especially helpful for those with cold extremities, arthritis, and tiredness.

Cinnamon as an anti-fungal, anti-viral, and antibiotic:

  • Cinnamon inhibits bacteria and pathogens, making it a great addition to your food during times of travel to avoid food poisoning.
  • The cinnamon essential oil is a reputable remedy for athletes foot when diluted in vegetable oil. Start with a 10% dilution with any vegetable oil when applying to the skin and apply once or twice daily. .
  • As a digestive aid, cinnamon improves the gut microbiome and ignites digestive fire, agni. For those with cold, slow digestion, combine with ginger, cardamom, or cloves.

The properties of cinnamon move warmth into deep tissues within the body, allowing this plant to penetrate through and treat conditions arising from stagnancy.
