Making the Most Incredible Switzerland Road Trip

Though you’ll need at least 2-3 weeks to fully explore the beauty of Switzerland, you can experience the highlights in just a week. Many travelers might find it challenging to tackle everything in one trip, so it’s a great idea to split your journey into several shorter excursions throughout the spring, summer, and fall.

In my opinion, it’s an absolute must-visit on any Switzerland itinerary.

Lucerne is a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. The city’s landmarks, coupled with the nearby Mount Pilatus, offer a range of activities for every type of traveler.

It’s only a 45-minute drive from Lucerne and it offers some of the nicest vantage points of the region. So visiting Mt. Pilatus is a no-brainer!

Day 6: Chur, Switzerland

After visiting the Lake Lucerne region, drive 1.5 hours to Chur, the oldest town in Switzerland. It’s known for its well-preserved old town, vibrant cultural scene, and as a gateway to the scenic regions of Graubünden. Chur offers a mix of history, culture, and natural beauty.

Chur’s charming old town, surrounded by mountains, is a fun place to explore. The town also serves as a great base for exploring the nearby Alps and enjoying outdoor activities. I recommend staying at least one day here, if not, two to explore the area.

• Old Town (Altstadt): Wander through the narrow, cobblestone streets, visiting landmarks such as the Bishop’s Palace and St. Martin’s Church.
• Rätisches Museum: Learn about the history and culture of Graubünden through fascinating exhibits.

Looking to spend some time in Chur? I recommend boarding the Bernina Express for a breathtaking train journey through the Swiss Alps to Tirano, Italy. This route is one of the most scenic in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

For other day trip ideas, check out Heidi Village in Maienfeld. This is the charming village that inspired Johanna Spyri’s famous “Heidi” stories. Explore the Heidi House and the surrounding trails. Another cool spot is Viamala Gorge, a dramatic gorge with a deep chasm and turquoise waters. It’s perfect for hiking and photography.

Chur’s mix of historical charm and natural beauty makes it a perfect stop on your road trip. Whether you’re exploring the old town, taking a scenic train ride, or hiking in the surrounding mountains, Chur is a must see on your ultimate Switzerland road trip.

Days 7-8: St. Moritz

After exploring Chur, head to the glamorous resort town of St. Moritz. Known for its luxury hotels, world-class skiing, and stunning Alpine scenery, St. Moritz is a top destination for both winter sports enthusiasts and summer adventurers.

St. Moritz is synonymous with elegance and outdoor recreation. The town offers a mix of upscale amenities, breathtaking landscapes, and a variety of activities year-round. I recommend spending at least 1 night here to soak it all in.

Here are my favorite spots in St. Moritz that you should definitely visit:

• Lake St. Moritz: Take a leisurely walk around the lake or try water sports like sailing and paddleboarding in the summer. In winter, the frozen lake hosts polo matches and horse racing.
• Muottas Muragl: Take the funicular to Muottas Muragl for panoramic views of the Engadin valley and enjoy hiking trails and a stunning restaurant terrace.
• Diavolezza: Ride the cable car to Diavolezza for incredible views of the Bernina Range and the Morteratsch Glacier. It’s a popular spot for skiing in winter and hiking in summer.

Days 9-11: Ticino (Switzerland’s Italian-Speaking Canton)

Next, head south to Ticino, the Italian-speaking region of Switzerland. Ticino offers a Mediterranean flair with beautiful lakes, charming villages, and stunning natural scenery. I recommend spending at least 2-3 days to explore all the quaint villages in Ticino.

This region is known for its warm climate, picturesque towns, and delicious cuisine. The blend of Swiss precision and Italian zest makes it a unique destination that I’d consider a hidden gem in Switzerland.

While visiting this beautiful region, I recommend hitting each of these destinations:

• Lugano: This vibrant city on the shores of Lake Lugano is the perfect base for exploring Ticino. Stroll along the lakeside promenade, visit Parco Ciani, and explore the charming old town.
• Lavartezzo: Known for its crystal-clear waters and picturesque stone bridge, Lavartezzo is a popular spot for swimming and relaxing by the river.
• Foroglio: This small village in the Bavona Valley is famous for its stunning waterfall and traditional stone houses. I consider this the most picturesque town in Ticino.
• Corippo: One of the smallest and most picturesque villages in Switzerland, Corippo is known for its rustic charm and beautiful architecture.
• Sonogno: Located in the Verzasca Valley, Sonogno offers scenic hiking trails, traditional stone houses, and a peaceful atmosphere.
• Lake Maggiore: Explore the Swiss side of Lake Maggiore, visit the botanical gardens of the Brissago Islands, and enjoy water activities like boating and swimming.

In addition, I recommend taking a funicular from Lugano to the top of Monte Brè for panoramic views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. Monte San Salvatore is another funicular ride from Lugano, offering stunning views and hiking opportunities. Lastly, be sure to add Valle Maggia to your itinerary. This beautiful valley offers scenic drives, hiking trails, and charming villages to explore.

Practical Tips for Visiting Ticino

Ticino offers a wide range of accommodations, from luxury hotels in Lugano to charming bed and breakfasts in the smaller villages above. Book in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons.

Ticino is well-connected by trains and buses. Though having a car is beneficial for exploring the more remote villages and valleys, including Foroglio, Lavartezzo, Corippo, and Sonogno.

While in Ticino, you’ll definitely want to experience the delicious blend of Swiss and Italian cuisine. Don’t miss trying risotto, polenta, and local wines from the region.

From its scenic lakes and picturesque villages to its warm weather, Ticino will be a unique part of your ultimate Switzerland road trip. You won’t find it mentioned in other guides! Stroll through its charming villages, swim in crystal-clear rivers, and enjoy the Mediterranean flair. It’s easy to see why this is a must on a Switzerland road trip itinerary!

Days 12-15: Interlaken (Including Day Trips)

Continue your journey 3 hours northwest to Interlaken, a picturesque town nestled between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, and a gateway to the Bernese Oberland.

Interlaken is an absolute paradise for anyone who loves outdoor activities and breathtaking scenery. It’s one of those places where every view feels like it’s straight out of a postcard.

One of my favorite experiences was taking the funicular up to Harder Kulm. Standing on the viewing platform, I felt like I was on top of the world, with panoramic views of the lakes and the majestic peaks of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau.

Exploring the charming villages around Interlaken was another highlight. Iseltwald, with its fairytale charm and serene lakefront, was particularly memorable. I spent a peaceful afternoon there, just soaking in the views and the tranquility. Another day, I took a boat ride on Lake Thun to Spiez, where I explored the beautiful Spiez Castle and enjoyed a leisurely walk along the lakeshore.

What to Look Out for in Interlaken

Interlaken is the adventure capital of Switzerland, offering a wide range of activities from hiking and paragliding to boat tours and scenic train rides.

Here are my favorite spots in Interlaken that you should definitely visit:

• Harder Kulm: Take the funicular to Harder Kulm for breathtaking views of Interlaken, the lakes, and the surrounding mountains. There’s a panoramic restaurant at the top for a meal with a view.
• Hohematte Park: This central park is perfect for a relaxing stroll and offers great views of the Jungfrau massif.
• Unterseen: Explore this charming old town adjacent to Interlaken with its traditional Swiss architecture and quaint shops.

While Interlaken is a nice town to stay in, for me, the main highlights are the destinations nearby. Here are the places you’ll want to check out within close proximity of Interlaken.

Day Trips from Interlaken:

• Lungern: Visit the beautiful Lungernsee and enjoy a peaceful boat ride or a scenic hike around the lake.
• Thun: Wander through Thun’s charming old town, visit Thun Castle, and enjoy a boat trip on Lake Thun.
• Brienz: Known for its woodcarving tradition, Brienz is a lovely village to explore. Don’t miss the Ballenberg Open-Air Museum nearby.
• Iseltwald: This picturesque village on the shores of Lake Brienz is perfect for a relaxing day by the water.
• Spiez: Visit Spiez Castle and enjoy the stunning views of Lake Thun and the surrounding vineyards.
• Gelmerbahn: Take a ride on the Gelmerbahn funicular, one of the steepest in Europe, for an exhilarating experience and incredible views. For less of a detour, consider stopping here on the drive from Ticino to Interlaken.
• Oeschinen Lake: Near Kandersteg, this stunning alpine lake is accessible by a short cable car ride and a hike. It’s perfect for picnics, swimming, and rowing.

Days 16-18: Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald

Located just 30-ish minutes from Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald can easily be covered as day trips from Interlaken. However, given their immense beauty and charm, I think you should dedicate a few days to exploring both. I highly recommend staying in Lauterbrunnen Valley for at least 2 nights to experience the most beautiful side of Switzerland!

Nestled in the Bernese Alps, these destinations are known for their stunning landscapes, waterfalls, and outdoor adventures. Here’s what you’ll want to see and do.

Lauterbrunnen

Lauterbrunnen is famous for its dramatic valley, dotted with 72 waterfalls, and offers a serene and scenic escape. For me, it’s the most postcard-worthy place in the Swiss Alps, a place that I’ll visit again and again.

Here are my favorite spots in Lauterbrunnen that you should definitely visit:

• Staubbach Falls: One of the highest free-falling waterfalls in Europe. A short walk from the village takes you to the base of these magnificent falls.
• Trümmelbach Falls: A series of impressive waterfalls inside a mountain, accessible by a tunnel lift. It’s a must-see natural wonder.
• Mürren: Take the cable car to this car-free village perched on a cliff for stunning views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains.

Grindelwald

Grindelwald offers a picturesque alpine setting with plenty of outdoor activities and breathtaking views. From the town of Grindelwald, you absolutely have to take the gondola up to the mountain summit called Grindelwald First. This is the ultimate adventure destination with its mountain cart and scooter rides!

Here are my favorite experiences in Grindelwald that you should consider:

• First Cliff Walk: A thrilling cliff-side walkway that offers panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys.
• First Flyer: Experience the thrill of zip-lining down the mountain at speeds of up to 84 km/h. The First Flyer is a popular activity for adrenaline seekers.
• Bachalpsee: A beautiful alpine lake accessible by a moderate hike from First. The reflections of the mountains in the lake are stunning.
• Eiger Trail: A famous hiking trail that runs along the base of the Eiger’s north face. It’s perfect for experiencing the dramatic alpine scenery.
• Mountain Cart: Ride a mountain cart down a specially designed track, offering a fun and unique way to descend the mountain.

Days 19-21: Zermatt

Once you finish exploring the stunning landscapes of Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald, head to Zermatt, the quintessential alpine village located at the foot of the iconic Matterhorn. Zermatt is car-free, so park your car in Täsch and take the shuttle train to Zermatt.

The village is walkable, and electric taxis and buses are available. It’s an awesome spot with a variety of outdoor activities, luxurious accommodations, and breathtaking scenery.

My Top Recommendations in Zermatt

Zermatt is famous for its majestic mountain views, especially of the Matterhorn, and offers numerous opportunities for hiking, skiing, and mountaineering. It’s very touristy, but for good reason. Here are my favorite spots in Zermatt that you should definitely visit:

• Matterhorn: The iconic pyramid-shaped peak is visible from many parts of Zermatt. Take in the views and capture some stunning photos.

Montreux is one of those places that just takes your breath away. I remember strolling along the lakeside promenade, the flowers in full bloom, the gentle waves of Lake Geneva lapping at the shore, and the majestic Alps framing the scene. It felt like walking through a postcard. The air was crisp, and there was a sense of tranquility that made every moment feel special.

The next city you’ll want to visit is Geneva, which is known for its international organizations, diplomatic significance, and beautiful location on the shores of Lake Geneva. Geneva offers a mix of historical sites, modern attractions, and natural beauty.

One of my most memorable experiences was seeing the Jet d’Eau up close. Watching this massive fountain shoot water 140 meters high into the sky with Lake Geneva and the Alps in the background was simply mesmerizing. It’s such an iconic symbol of the city.

My recommended spots in Geneva that you shouldn’t miss:

Insider tip: On the way from Geneva to Bern, I recommend stopping by Fribourg. This University town has incredible medieval and Gothic architecture and stunning views of the Sarine River.

Days 28-29: Bern

After enjoying the international flair of Geneva, head to Bern, the capital city of Switzerland. Bern is a city that feels like stepping into a fairytale. From the intricate clock towers to the hidden fountains and charming cafes— all with views of the Swiss Alps and the Aare River—there’s a whole lot to take in here.

If you don’t much time for your road trip of Switzerland, then I recommend pairing Bern with other places in the Bernese Oberland region, including Interlaken, Thun, and Grindelwald. But if time isn’t an issue, I absolutely recommend allocating 1-2 full days staying in Bern.

What to Look Out for in Bern

• Zytglogge (Clock Tower): This medieval clock tower is one of Bern’s most iconic landmarks. Be sure to watch the clock’s mechanical figures perform their hourly show.
• Bern Cathedral (Münster): Climb to the top of Switzerland’s tallest cathedral for a panoramic view of the city and the surrounding countryside.
• Federal Palace (Bundeshaus): The seat of the Swiss government. You can take a guided tour to learn about Swiss politics and see the impressive architecture.
