Finding new love could be just a swipe away.
Dating app Tinder recently released its annual “Year in Swipe” report, which spotlights trends from its millions of daters who open the app looking for love. With a record number of people traveling internationally, the dating app revealed a surge in users who utilize a “passport” feature, which allows people to virtually explore the dating scene in a different country or city from where they presently are.
Travelers Departing the United States were looking for love in the City of Light, as Paris was the top city that people would passport to. Throughout 2024, there was a 103 percent increase in using the passport feature in France, which could be from the volume of people who attended the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Beyond Paris, Shinjuku City, Japan; Medellín, Colombia; Amsterdam, Netherlands; and Barcelona, Spain rounded out the top five cities that people searched for matches from the United States.
For countries overall, Mexico, Canada, Colombia, Philippines, and Japan were the top places that American users would search for love internationally, the app shared with Travel + Leisure. Rounding out the top 10 are France, Spain, the Dominican Republic, Australia, and Germany.
The report was generated by internal Tinder data throughout 2024. The company shared with T+L that the passport feature is used an average of 145,000 times per day, and the virtual route connections have totaled over 62 billion miles.
While many travelers may turn to Tinder looking for love, some travel experts say it can be an easy way to meet locals and find suggestions for hidden gems. “Guidebooks are great. But there are plenty of things a local knows better than Lonely Planet,” travel writer Katie Jackson shared in a 2021 article for T+L about how she uses Tinder to find local insights.
In addition to the travel trends, the Tinder report revealed that users were on the lookout for ‘nano-ships’, or smaller commitments, and were more vocal about the type of match they were seeking out.
