This Airline’s Cabins Just Got a $200 Million Overhaul — See Inside

Finland’s flagship carrier, Finnair, just completed a $200 million overhaul of its cabins, and it’s officially rolled out on flights across the United States.

The makeover touched every part of the airline’s long-haul cabins, including a new business class seat, a new premium economy cabin, and a refreshed economy cabin, Finnair shared with Travel + Leisure. While the airline first launched the new cabin in 2022, it took about two years to complete the overhaul and roll it out across its network.

The new cabins are now available on all flights to and from the U.S.

“Since its launch in 2022, customer feedback … has been excellent, so we are proud to be able to offer the renewed cabin on flights to all our long-haul destinations,” Ole Orvér, the chief commercial officer at Finnair, said in a statement shared with T+L. “We also know our customers value consistency and reliability, so to offer a uniform cabin concept across our whole fleet is a huge step on our customer experience journey.”

The new cabin, which is available on the airline’s entire long-haul fleet of A350 and A330 aircraft, has been designed with warm, dark colors to evoke a sense of comfort on board and features midnight blue seats and large seatback screens. 

In business class, seats are laid out in a 1-2-1 configuration with each seat surrounded by a fixed shell. The seat, which transforms into a lie-flat bed, includes a custom-designed reading light, built-in USB A and C charging ports, and a wireless charger.

In premium economy, travelers are treated to 38 inches of seat pitch along with memory foam cushions and a 13-inch screen. And economy passengers will enjoy 18 inches of seat width and USB-A ports at every seat. 

Finnair operates a fleet of mostly Airbuses along with Embraer 190 and ATR 72-500 aircraft, according to the carrier. The airline told T+L it plans to similarly upgrade the cabins of its regional E190 aircraft in the coming months.

Finnair offers several ticket types from the “economy superlight” fare, which does not include a carry-on bag, to business class options complete with a lie-flat bed with mattress pad and Nordic-inspired meals on long-haul flights.
