This Coastal Town Was Just Named the Best ‘Hidden Gem’ Vacation Destination in the U.S. for Retirees and Seniors

Everyone loves a good hidden gem — including seniors. Now, medical supply website Carewell is here to help uncover the best “hidden gem” travel destinations for that age demographic, specifically.

In August, Carewell unveiled its list of the best-kept secret locations that “provide seniors with exceptional vacation conditions, affordability, and vibrant communities.” To come to its conclusion, the team analyzed more than 160 cities across America with populations between 75,000 and 100,000. It judged each based on key factors, including lodging (analyzing the cost of the average daily rates for vacation rentals), dining and bars (based on average ratings on Yelp reviews), walkability, safety, and senior populations.

After looking at all the data, it named Palm Coast, Florida, the No. 1 hidden gem travel destination for seniors.

The Floridian town, located just south of Saint Augustine, “offers a beautiful coastal setting with plenty of sunshine and outdoor activities,” the website explained. Here, it added, travelers can explore its gorgeous beaches and waterfront parks like Washington Oaks Gardens State Park or head out for a round of golf. (Consider booking a tee time at Palm Harbor Golf Club when you’re ready.) You can also walk its numerous nature trails, including the Flagler County Cultural Council Turtle Trail to both work up a sweat and see some art along the way, or go out for a good time at the town’s arts festivals.

Best of all, as Visit Florida noted, seniors are welcome to bring their four-legged friends, too, who can all visit its plethora of dog-friendly beaches like Bay Drive Park, Jungle Hut Park, and MalaCompra Park.

Coming in a close second is Clifton, New Jersey, which took high honors thanks to its “suburban comfort with easy access to urban amenities,” including its quick proximity to New York City, its diverse dining, and its fantastic parks like the Garret Mountain Reservation

And rounding out the top three is Evanston, Illinois. It took third place as it “blends the charm of a college town with cultural and recreational opportunities.” Here, Carewell noted, visitors can “enjoy the scenic shores of Lake Michigan with beautiful beaches, parks, and walking paths perfect for leisurely strolls and picnics,” spend time immersed in culture at the Evanston Art, and even find educational opportunities offered by Northwestern University, “including lectures, performances, and art exhibits that enrich the community — and your trip.”
