The 2024 Chicago Marathon was packed with fireworks and fast performances. In the women’s race, Ruth Chepngetich set a mind-blowing new world record of 2:09:56, while young marathon star John Korir became the sixth-fastest man in history, winning the men’s race in 2:02:44. It wasn’t just the elites who delivered impressive performances—2,000 Canadian marathoners made the trip to the Windy City, many achieving personal bests. Here’s a look at the top Canadians.
Phil Parrot-Migas of London, Ont., the only Canadian man in the elite field, was the top Canadian finisher, setting a new personal best of 2:15:32. Despite having one of his bottles taken by another elite athlete at the 37 km mark, Parrot-Migas managed a 21-second personal best, recording the eighth-fastest time by a Canadian marathoner this year.
On the women’s side, Meaghan Strum of Halifax was the top female Canadian finisher, placing 22nd overall. The 36-year-old shaved more than six minutes off her previous best of 2:43:25, and has improved her marathon time by an impressive 45 minutes over the last five years.
Several Canadian marathoners also triumphed in their age categories. Elizabeth Waywell of Guelph, Ont., finished first in the women’s 65-69 division with a time of 3:15:30, just missing her Canadian age-group record of 3:14:18 by one minute. She won her age group by eight minutes and would have even topped the women’s 60-64 division. Terence Markle of Calgary also topped his age group, winning the men’s 65-69 category in 3:08:45.
