Vegan House Dressing (oil-free, gluten-free)

This vegan house dressing is – in one word – spectacular!

For anyone wanting a thick, creamy dressing with no added oil, you must try this recipe. It’s easy to make, and packs a punch of umami with a simple combination of seasonings.

Creamy Vegan House Dressing

This Vegan House Dressing comes from Dreena’s Kind Kitchen. I have a chapter on oil-free vegan salad dressings and creative salads in that book, so be sure to flip through your copy for some other oil-free dressings.

For instance, in that chapter (named The Salad Bowl) you’ll also find an oil-free Italian Vinaigrette, a Sunny Curry Dressing, a Cilantro Lover’s Dressing, my very popular Buddha Dressing, a Nut-Free Caesar Dressing (also found here), “Guac Your World” Dressing (I love my puns 😆), and more!

If you don’t yet have Dreena’s Kind Kitchen, get yourself a copy on amazon.com or amazon.ca.

But let’s get back to this Vegan House Dressing recipe!

First, this is a cashew-based dressing. If you cannot use cashews, please get yourself DKK or my plant-powered dressings ebook – because both have a slew of oil-free dressings, most of which are nut-free.

Sometimes, I just like to use cashews, as with this house dressing. The flavor is clean and simple, and the texture is so creamy.

But, what we really need to talk about… the flavor!

This oil-free vegan dressing has exceptional umami, with the simplest combinations of ingredients. Yet it’s one of those special times when the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

To make this Creamy Vegan House Dressing especially creamy, use a high-speed blender. If you are shopping for one, I highly recommend a refurb unit. They are basically new models, the housing and most components are brand new. It’s a sweet deal. If you don’t have a high-speed, you can also use an immersion blender or standard blender, just blend longer.

Finally, this vegan house dressing can be transformed into an oil-free vegan ranch! How? Just see the recipe notes and get blending.

Ok, we ready for the recipe? Of course you are, who needs more chit-chat! Let’s go!

Creamy Vegan House Dressing

This thick, creamy dressing has no added oil, and it packs a great umami punch with the combination of seasonings. It’s quick and easy and might just become your new staple sauce!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup soaked and drained raw cashews
  • 1/3 – 1/2 cup cup water
  • 1 tablespoon tahini
  • 1 tablespoon tamari or coconut aminos
  • 1 1/2 – 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons pure maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon (rounded) Dijon mustard
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon sliced green onion

Instructions

  • Starting with 1 1/2 tablespoons vinegar, combine all the ingredients in a blender (or in a deep cup if using an immersion blender) and process until smooth and creamy. If using a high-powered blender, this will smooth out very quickly. If using a standard blender/immersion blender, it will take a few minutes. Taste and add additional vinegar if desired. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5–6 days.

Notes

Ranch Dressing: I hear from readers all the time requesting ranch dressing recipes. This recipe easily converts into a ranch dressing. Simply omit the tamari and increase the salt to 1/2 teaspoon. Add 1/2 teaspoon dill seeds, 1⁄2 teaspoon onion powder, and 1⁄4 teaspoon garlic powder. Presto! A ranch dressing that is better than any store-bought.
